I didn't get into authorized dealers, buying online, or extended warranties because there's a lot of varying opinions. But to help out, here's what I do know:

Most manufacturers are VERY insistant that you buy from an authorized dealer if you plan on having their warranty honored. Yamaha is no different. They expressly say it on their website.

Many authorized dealers sell at MSRP because they have you over a barrel with the warranty (you can see the "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" benefits of this arrangement between the manufacturer and the retailer).

There are authorized dealers (usually smaller local B&M shops that will ship you product) that sell significantly below MSRP and one of the disadvantages is they can't advertise their prices so they're hard to find.

If you check the right forums and meet the right people you can obtain this information (I'm however not one of them).

Extended Warranties are a very personal choice. I sold computers for Circuit City one holiday season a few years ago and people were either for or against them. There seemed to be little middle ground.

We earned commission (versus Best Buy who does not), but the killing was made selling the warranty. This is for the same reasons someone else mentioned. A lot of people never collect on them and it becomes free money.

It's my opinion (and therefore should be generally disregarded) that if something electronic is going to break..it's going to do it pretty quickly, and inevitably it means there will be other problems.

As the others have said, good luck with your search. Hopefully you can find the right equipment at the right price and put together your ideal system.

isabel, i believe yammi now has a 5 year warranty on the 1400. i have the 1300 and have the epic 60 system; it sounds fantastic. i must add, i'm about to upgrade the vp100 for the vp150.

Lots of things, Isabel. I'm not terribly impressed by the sales tactics of your "good guys". Forget extended warranties. Consider the return if you have 30 days.

Plenty of internet sites(check Yamaha 1400 on Google)sell the 1400 for prices in the $600 area. The specific place I had in mind was 6th Avenue Electronics(6ave.com)which is an authorized Yamaha dealer, but not for online sales. So the routine is that you call by phone(often you talk with "Joe") to make the buy, rather than doing it online. The deal is that they give you the 1400 for the same $529 price they have advertised for the old 1300(out of stock)when you ask. This deal may only be for a short time. They charge you 6 cents shipping(can't figure out the connection). They're shipping the latest version with the new Dolby Pro Logic IIx, which processes two and five channel recordings into seven channels(although you won't have the seven speakers needed for the full effect). Older versions of the 1400 and 2400 are being upgraded to DPLIIx at no charge.

As far as the speakers go, I suggested the M60s because you specified towers, but I personally prefer smaller speakers and use the M22s myself. You won't go wrong either way.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

I guessing that the $1500 is for the entire speaker system, not just the two front main speakers, right?

If so, here's my suggestion.

Return the 1400 and get your $799 back. Then buy the same model for $529 as suggested. That puts $270 into your speaker budget. Now you've got $1770 for speakers.

MAINS - M22ti
CENTER - VP150
SURROUNDS - QS8
SUB - Hsu STF-2

This puts you at $1620. That leaves you $150 to put towards some speaker wire, and interconnects. You may even have enough left for a DVD or two.

Your room isn't that large, so the M22ti's with the Hsu sub should work extremely well for you. The M60's would work as well also, but they do like a little more room, and they'd blow your budget. You'll be very, very happy with the M22ti's and the Hsu sub.

Where are you located? I'm guessing the SoCal area, as you went to The Good Guys. I'm in LA if you'd like to hear some Axioms in person before purchasing.

Glad to see my humble advice was echoed by a couple of "ole pro" experts :P

Hello mwc. Just got off work and decided to surf the net for more info from you guys. I read the review from John that you posted and sure enough the axioms really are excellent speakers. Though some of the technical terms I don't really understand. Looks like you got all the nice speakers in your system and one of them is the axiom. Maybe I can find somebody close to me to audition these speakers this coming weekend like you suggested.Thanks.

Hello Nick, I'm really weighing my options right now either to get the floor models which I originally wanted compared to the M22i's. After reading the review on the M22 speakers, I'm having second thoughts of just getting it with the HSU sub woofer. Wow typical of me, to change my mind all the time. I plan to audition some speakers this long weekend. Thanks.

Hello Rocky. Congrats on the new purchase and please give us a review on how the M60's perform cause I really wanted the floor models. But reading on and on I'm now in between them and the M22's. Regarding the 1400 I disconnected it this morning and plan to return it to GG this week. I will just use the extra money to buy a little more on my system. In regards to the TV they told me that I can upgrade it but can't return it cause it's over 30 days old. Thanks.

JohnK thanks for all the advice and I will call 6th ave. electronics tomorrow to place my order with Joe. How about a phone no. in case I can't find their website. Anyway that's quite a savings from $799 plus tax to $529 delivered.Yes I originally wanted the floor model speakers and still do, but I'm considering the M22's also. Just typical of me, to change my mind.
And johnbasham thanks to the link on the yamaha sales.
TwoDan congrats on the future upgrade and that's why I have so many questions cause I don't want to upgrade every year. I plan to keep my system for maybe 2 to 3 yrs.

Spiffnme, yes the $1500 is for the entire system. Your input on the speakers is really excellent as like the others and the only thing I might change would be the M22's to maybe the floor model speakers. Hey I'm on the opposite direction from you. North. Anyway thanks for the input and everybody have a nice THANKSGIVING. If you can think of anything else please let me know cause I'm often to all suggestions. Like I said before it would take me a few years before the next upgrade.
