Small room, 12’ X 16’. Main seating is 12’ away from the screen. I did have my side surrounds slightly behind the seating distance at 14’ due to me terminating the speaker wire J-boxes too far to the rear of the room. I always felt as if they were too far back, so I recently changed this and moved them three feet forward. They are now roughly, 75 deg forward to the seating position. Things sound a bit different, but now I can’t help but think they need to be moved back a bit. So now I’m thinking I’ll just buy another set of QS8’s and install them where I had the Q’s mounted before, giving me tow sets of side surrounds.

Anyone running two sets of side surrounds? Anyone try it?

Different topic. With DD PLIIz coming, I’m sure I’ll have to have it. PLIIz using additional front R/L speakers placed above the F/L mains. I’m wondering what would be a good speaker to use for these new channels.

I have a feeling it will be a while before we see receivers doing 9.1 PLIIz. What they'll offer instead is the choice between doing 7.1 PLIIx with rears, or 7.1 PLIIz with heights.

Either way, since ProLogic is all about ambiance extraction, and the QSes are excellent at reproducing ambient sounds; I'd say a pair for the hight channel may be the way to go.

We'll have to wait until 'z' receivers are in more people's hands and we get some listening reports for a subjective answer rather than a guess.

Mike, I don't know your room as well as you do, of course, but I'd have thought that 2' back from the listening position would have been just about perfect in a 5.1 setup(directly to the side for 7.1). With the wide dispersion of the QSs can't see using two sets of them fairly close together playing the same channel.

As Chris mentions, the DPLIIz can now use the front height speakers as an alternative to the back surrounds. Because of the ambient nature of the material(when some is in fact present)I'd think that QS4s just a few inches below the ceiling would be good for your room.

What John wrote (I know, big surprise). The THX spec for side surrounds is directly to the side to slightly behind the seating position. Your test confirms this.

I'm running surround backs too guys. That's why I moved the sides foward some. I think I'm just going to install the second set of sides as soon as another set of Walnut speakers become available on the Owners Club. I'm in the process of swapping everything out anyway....

So the height speakers are for ambient sound eh? Nothing directional? As soon as the Denon 4810 becomes available, I'm probably going to buy it. It is a 9.1 receiver, I believe. I haven't looked at real hard yet.

Yeah, Mike; although it's been said(with good reason)how "forgiving" the QSs are with respect to positioning, the less that they have to "forgive" the better. So, for a 7.1 setup with back surround speakers the side surrounds should be as directly to the side as possible, since no "phantom" back surround help from the side surround speakers is needed.

At least until the day when we have still more discrete channels available(and as I've commented before, the room is so filled with speakers that there's no room for humans, just an Audyssey microphone at the sweet spot)the height material will be extracted ambience(which is "real", of course)which is best presented from an upward angle.

Thanks John. A pair of Accents might just be the ticket then. They're small enough to not be all that visible, and I can get them in a non-descript color to blend in. Oh, and then there’s also the newest Audyssey where you add a couple more “width” speakers in the front of the room. I’m beginning to think this will never end.

As HT upgrades go, adding more speakers channels ranks somewhere below figuring out why I can’t get my front yard drip irrigation system working (probably user error). And yes it’s an HT upgrade because less time watering is more time watching.

However, it’s great to have people around like Mike who help push down the costs of innovation for later adopters like me. \:\)
