This was posted by Engadget a day or so ago, but I just got to it tonight. An interesting read, especially the last section on the Dolby "sand box" and upscaling 5.1 encoded tracks to 24.1 tracks. If they can already to that, it seems like the PLIIz is just an afterthought, hah.

interesting esp. the point about DTS HD having more titles available than TrueHD.

That was a good read. I have to admit that I've always preferred DTS over Dolby whenever there was a choice. But after reading this article I realize that Dolby might just be the force that has made others strive to be even better. Competition creates a better product after all. The sandbox was really interesting, and the fact that all 24 speakers were fed by a simple 5.1 track was really good to know. I know that the industry has already started to make the move to 7.1, but perhaps this experiment will cap the movement to that. No need to have to upgrade recievers every couple of years when they decide to go to 9.1, then 13.1, then 19.1 and so on and so forth. Find the sweetspot, and then keep it there for God sakes.

As much as I love HT and high end audio, the constant need for upgrading to be able to play the latest technology gets to be quite annoying. For instance when I plunked down almost 2 grand when I bought my Denon 4802 I had visions of it anchoring my HT system for years and years to come... hell it's even 9.1 channel capable! But the whole HDMI movement has made it obsolete in a mere 5 years time... rediculous. So now that I'm seriously considering getting a new reciever to comply with the requirements for this technology, I don't want to fall behind in another 3 to 5 years because they decided that 12.1 audio is going to be the next industry standard, and everything that gets put out from then on won't be playable on my new reciever. UGGG!!!

Of course I'm aware that technology marches on dispite me, but a guy can dream can't he!

While reading that article I couldn't help but wonder what kind of speakers they use in the listening rooms over there at Dolby?

Micah, at least last year for the blind listening tests of the various audio formats this shows their setup.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

micah, keep in mind that although computer technology changes by the month to year, people are ALOT slower to adopt new home technologies in A/V.
A ton of North Americans are still scrambling now to get hooked up with a digital receiver because of the recent broadcasting transmission shift. A majority of people who own TVs in N.America do not own any surround sound system.

Heck, i thik of the people i know either at work, friends or family and easily 95% or more DO NOT have any sort of surround sound system and some don't even own a stereo.

Although the latest A/V innovations seems like the # of surround speakers is increasing as a standard, the movies and tv content will unlikely not conform to such a standard for a very long time given what i've already mentioned. Your point about adopting early with a 9.1 receiver is proof of that pudding.
Anyone know of a dvd that has 9.1 encoded sound? Let alone 5 years ago? Or for that matter, 5 years after you bought it such a standard has not evolved.

There would be no point to make dvds or tv broadcasting in such standards except to serve the small percentage of North Americans who are enthralled with surround systems and have the money and gusto to actually buy and set one up. That and the bandwidth could be a limitation, that i'm unsure.

Most ppl here on the forums are WAY ahead of the curve when it comes to home audio equipment ownership. Get a good 5.1, MAYBE a 7.1 setup and sit back and relax for the next decade.
The term "upgrade" is far over used in these forums IMO.

You are indeed right about that. Besides the people I've met here on this site, the rest of the people I know of in real life go out and spend a maximum of $500 dollars down at HH Gregs or somewhere on one of those box set 5.1 surround systems and are as happy as a pig in shit with them. And that's maybe 10% of all the people I know. The rest are happy with their TV speakers!

I suppose we are the exception and not the rule after all.
