I would try to find someone with Legacy Classics or Von Schweikert VR-2s that you can audition. My brother-in-law has the Legacy Classics and he runs them without a subwoofer. They have very nice tight bass and beautiful sounding ribbon tweeters. I believe that he paid around $1,500 on the used market a few years back, but I think that in the current economic situation that you could find them for less.
