I am looking to add to my DVD collection now that i have a stereo system. I am cheap and only want to buy action/fantasy/science movies. But only movies with good sound effects and good transfers. I only ask for that because sometimes good movies are not transfered well, and then you buy it, and then the 'Platinum' edition comes out 1 year later.
Thanks

Run, don't walk, and get the Lord of the Rings (both I and II) deluxe extended editions. Awesome sound, and picture. Not to mention the movies aren't half bad.

X-Men 1.5 and X-Men 2 are both good as well.

Why get the Alien Quad when only the first two movies are good?

Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Thin Red Line(thinking mans war movie, though), Die Hard Trilogy, T2, Gladiator, Star Wars Episode 2, Matrix 1 and 2.

That is just a starter.

Oh, and I let Saving Private Ryan out on purpose. Overrated, overbloated, full of cliches. Empire of the Sun and Schindlers list are both superior WW2 film by Spielberg.

btw...slightly off topic, but I saw Lord 3 last night. (Damn I'm tired) Awesome. When this one hits DVD, it's going to work your subwoofer over real hard.

I'll second "Black Hawk Down" - you'll feel tired by the end of the movie!
You can also get a ditally remixed and restored version of the original cut of "Full Metal Jacket" which is highly worth buying.

Back on topic, if you are into war movies, get the mini series DVD set Band of Brothers. It's in DD an DTS widescreen. Amazon has the set for $84.

Buy the book Band of Brothers. Much better than the mini-series, and the mini-series was great. Do not expect a 'story,' it is not fiction.

I'll second "Band of Brothers". Excellent mini-series and also a great book. The book won't quite sound as good as the mini-series on your HT, though.

Have you checked out "Gladiator" yet? The opening 15 minute battle sequence will give a through test to any Home Theater setup. The rest of the movie is quite good (IMHO, of course), with good sound mastering and picture throughout. I *think* it's DTS-ES too, but I could be wrong.

The 1994 hit "Twister" is also not a bad movie, but has some amazing sound, esp in the tornado sequences. This one will test any subwoofer to its limits! Also the surround effects are pretty decent as well. Best of all, you can probably find this one in the bargain bin for $10 since it's almost 10 years old. Standard DD 5.1, but it is THX mastered.

Another personal favorite would be "Ronin", from a few years back. Many intense car-chase scenes that make full use of the surrond channels, and an excellent plot to boot.

For a newer movie, "Finding Nemo" is also pretty cute and has some startling HT effects. In several "gimmie-somethin-to-test-my-new-sub" threads on other forums this one is getting high ratings. Several scenes have very strong *subsonic* effects that can only be fully appreciated with a good subwoofer (so I've been told). Surround effects are great and the story is cute, if not actually pretty decent.

I think you and I are the only two people in the galaxy that likes Ronin. Loved the chase scenes. Do you know what was in the case?

Ronin was fantastic. A bit dificult to figure out who was on what side on the first time through, but multiple watchings helped that.

Wow, Ronin-lovers! *all-warm-and-fuzzy*.

The cars? It's been awhile... I remember that DeNiro & crew are in a beautiful brand new Audi A8 (same one mentioned in the beginning that they upgrade) in one of the chase scenes, and the big chase scene near the middle-end involves a mid 90's BMW 5 or 7 series and I'm pretty sure an Opel.

Oh, gawd, somebody had to go and say Wal-Mart. Consider my button pressed.

Wal-Mart is an anti-union employer and owned by an anti-public education family. They are predatory marketers who care little about either the communities they suck money out of or their employees. They continue to lose legal challenges about forced, uncompensated overtime.

Wal-Mart's practices do not reflect my values and I refuse to contribute to their bloated bottom line by shopping there. I urge anyone who truly cares about living-wage jobs to examine how they spend their dollars and purchase elsewhere.

Soap box mode off.

ObTopicContent: in addition to those already mentioned, the Toy Story disks are pretty cool.

tom, i agree with you regarding walmart. i also choose a small hardware store over hd or loews; my business is a little one in the industry, and i prefer the more personalized servie in a smaller store. now the next question, and consider the amount of dry mouths and budget.

Dan, if those are the options, my choices are clear.

Harpoon. And some Guinness for those who might like a dark beer later in the evening or a black and tan.

Think Globally, Drink Locally. Support your local brewer. Fresher is better. yadda yadda yadda.

Where the heck is the beer thread again?....

Not all that much of a beer drinker myself. Red wine is more my speed. Though on a really hot day, when I'm really thirsty, I sometimes do crave a cold one. This post should probably be in the beer thread, eh?

I'm very very very very allergic to alcohol hence I never really enjoyed it. 3 sips and I turn siller red. 10 sips and my eyes goes blood shot, my heart beats way too fast and I almost have an asthma attack. 1 beer will make me pass out. Tried it...didn't like it.
So when I party in the raves and bars I just dance and enjoy the company of my friends. I used to smoke but quit when the fiancee got pregnant almost 3 years ago. I said I'd quit if the fiancee got pregnant.(We lost the baby at 34 weeks, unexplained)Quit cold turkey after 14 years of a pack every 2 days.
The only time I really enjoyed being drunk (don't laugh guys) was this product from long ago called Sarasoda...it was like .5% or was it 1.2% alcohol. I got drunk with one of those Sarasodas. The other time I felt "drunk" was acclimatizing to 12,500 feet when I was snowboarding in the Andes at Chile.

Consider this a blessing. I probably enjoy alcohol too much. Although I must admit I'm slowing down in my old age.

Definitely...but right now our efforts are being spent on preparing to move into our new home. I bought a 2 level 2 bedroom + den loft in downtown Toronto back in 2000. It took this long to get their act together. Expenses for the new place has to be paid for first. Then expenses for the wedding. Then we will try again.
But it could be Peter's fault that my plans could change. Look at the above post. Ops..that is too much information.

Well, when she finally does get preg-ified and then de-pregified (i.e. gives birth), be prepared for "the long hiatus" after the baby is born. We're on doctors orders -- no [insert cheesy rhythmic music here] until at least her next appointment in mid January.

In addition to the DVDs already mentioned, here are few more:

Goldeneye: Special Edition (great surround effects throughout this Bond movie)
Jurassic Park
Mask Of Zorro: Superbit
Mission Impossible 2
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Replacement Killers: Special Edition (non-stop action as Chow Yun-Fat kicks ass!)
Spider Man
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (for the Pod Race)
Terminator: Special Edition
Thirteenth Floor
XXX

If you've never seen the Thirteenth Floor, it's a VERY good sci-fi film that was overshadowed by another movie released the same year called the Matrix...

Tom,
at the risk of making this a more political forum (which I love about this board, that there is so very, very little talk of politics), I do take extreme exception with the one comment about WalMart. There is nothing at all wrong with being an anti-Union employer. I think it's about time some companies did more to stand up to the antiquated union system....end rant.

sorry everyone, but I did have to make a comment to stick up for the other side. On a more topical note, if you're looking to check out a couple of good films, I don't think anyone has mentioned U-571 yet. I also really like Enemy at the Gates (though a lot of people I talked to thought it was pretty slow).

Hi,

Check out the DVD of "The Core"; it's like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with this nuclear-propelled train into the earth's magma. Great effects and sound. Also "The Bourne Identity". I recommended both of these for a home theater column I write for a Canadian magazine.

U-571 is darn good for surround effects although i really love the opening scene for Ice Age, and yes, unions have been overrun with those who have abused the rules, privelages and ideals of such a purpose.
Has anyone heard about the union on the east coast (New Brunswick i think) that recently lobbied for a man to get his job back?
Apparenlty the guy carried a gun into the office and threatened co-workers and hence was jailed and of course fired.
But the union is actually fighting to get him his job back.
