Does Pandora not have licensing for some music?

I decided to make up a station of the stuff I used to listen to in high school for my morning in the office: Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, Van Halen, AC/DC and Jethro Tull.

Well, my channel has been playing an hour or so and has only played one Aerosmith track, one Van Halen, FOUR Scorpions tracks, Four GNR tracks, but NO Led Zep, Jethro Tull, or Jethro Tull.

I've had great luck with playing genres or music, such as "Blues", but this selection seems strange on their part to keep playing bands that I haven't selected, while totally ignoring bands that I DID choose when creating the channel.

Is it possible that Pandora simply doesn't have licensing for some bands or something?

(Now it's playing a Blues track even though I've verified I'm still on the Aerosmith Radio choice...(!!!)

Someone at work was just mentioning how Pandora rarely plays the artists he actually selects, but rather similar artists. He says he's had better luck with last.fm. I've never used either.

Mark, I think that is how Pandora works, it is like listening to the Radio. I have found that when I setup my own stations and add my own artists to that station, it will eventually play them, but usually you have to listen to other "similar" artists. You can give a "thumbs down" to any artist you don't want to hear, and yours might come up nest.

Grooveshark is free and you can listen to whatever you want...

Wow...thanks for the link. Didn't know about Grooveshark. How do they get away with having all of those songs posted for people to play whatever they want?

Agreed. I haven't listened to Pandora since the US decided it was a threat to National Security to let it stream music outside it's borders but as I recall, that was the whole purpose. Put in the name of a band you like and it will play music of very similar types, but not necessarily the band you picked. I guess if can now put multiple bands into a single channel selection, one of those bands could trigger another to appear if they are of similar styles.

There is a way around Pandora's IP restriction....

Yes, I may or may not have been doing that. I just don't want to mention it in case those black SUVs in front of my house are CIA. ;\)

Haven't tried it for myself, just came across a mention of it in a forum a while back. I've tried AOL music, which is legal in Canada, but I just can't get into the whole online music thing. I'd rather listen to my own CDs.

I subscribe to Real's Rhapsody service. I use it to listen to new releases to find out if I want to buy the CD or not. I don't mind paying the $13 a month to be able to pick exactly what songs I want to hear, rather than the radio-like service (although Rhapsody has "radio" channels if you just want background of a particular style).
