The post says they were custom made by Ian for this former reseller. Only the man himself could confirm if these are real and if they actually perform better. If they do, my ceilings are higher than 6'7"...

But why photoshop? seems like a lot of trouble to go to. The extra mids and bass drivers would be cool but 4 tweeters per tower seems like a lot in the top end.. But then again I am no speaker designer(or photoshop artist

I doubt they sound as good as M80s alone in a home environment, since Mojo and I ran the M60 on top of the M80 and it didn't sound very good at all.

Since Ian would have modified the cross-overs for the new arrangement and the size of the cabinets, I doubt that putting two independant speakers on top of one another is comparable. But I admit some reservations as, if the result was really much better, it would have become a product offering. Unless there are some other constraints we are unaware. I think Ian would be the only to be able answer (and confirm it exists) those questions.

Well it would seem the biggest constraint here would just be moving these darn things. I wonder though, considering their height, weight, the doubling of speakers and size of cabinetry, would there not have to be some extra bracing here just to absorb the weight alone? Four tweeters, talk about bright sounding! Also, looking at the picture and given the high center of gravity, I would think these babies would tip over quite easily if you accidentally bumped in to them.

looks like simply two M80s stacked with the top one inverted. It's certainly plausible, but why bother? Just because Ian acceded to the request doesn't necessarily mean he thought it was a good idea.

hey everyone, sorry if i offended anyone. i brought them out of storage and have been looking for a reasonably priced amp for the 3 of them, hence emotiva... anyways they are REAl! here's the story, before axiom was an online seller only, many years ago i worked in a small retail shop and one boring saturday i towerd up a pair of m80's, called up ian and made the road trip to axiom to check out the place and ask him to build these for me. nothing fancy just 6 m80's built into 3 lcr's. so there you have it. m160's what do think about this, qs16's...:)

I don't see how anyone would be offended (although the M80's posse IS a little fanatical) It looks like several here, owe you 5 bucks.

Hey, I think it is cool. Many companies that charge as much as a luxury car for their speakers use similar configurations (in terms of seemingly useless numbers of drivers). No idea how it would sound, but if Axiom let them out the door I think all should assume they don't sound bad by any measure.
Massive, no doubt. But behind a screen, no problem there. Bright, I'd think so, but with a crossover specific to the design, I'm sure that can be turned down.
Fun, no matter what.

i knew someone was going to ask that question. i don't think ian would appreciate me saying what i paid. i wouldn't have done it if the price wasn't right keep in mind i worked for a retail store before axiom went internet only. i wonder if he'd make me a 3 channel version of his digital ampifiers. 2 is not enough and 8 is 3 too many...

i wonder if he'd make me a 3 channel version of his digital ampifiers. 2 is not enough and 8 is 3 too many... I just asked Ian that question via PM and he said he could do a 4 channel version (which I already knew was possible) as the amp runs 4 boards feeding 2 channels each. Once you add the cost of the extra channel above the 2 channel amp the cost becomes somewhat negligble for the full 8 channels, at least to me.

i've been listening to just two of these from an older yamaha receiver, rxv2090, wired to 8 ohms they sound great and the amp barely gets warm at loud levels, maybe i'll just get a decent a/v receiver to power all 3. what about qs16's?

How sturdy are the speakers? They must be able to tip very easily with being so high and narrow...I found my M60's needed outriggers, I can't imagine these not falling over with a light breeze...

those of you with m80's and a sense of humour flip one over the other and take a listen. don't drop them I also posted in the wall o fame thread, I had tried this with M60s on top of the M80s( thread ) and didn't like it much, when sitting you only heard the one M80, when standing you heard a layered sound, maybe for a very large room and much greater listening distances things would even out.

i read your post it was interesting. one thing i do know for sure is that every human being on earth hears differently... some like it hot and some like it cold too. anyways i like the sound of them, i guess i could do an a/b test for my own use. a to the bottom and b to the top, a or b, a and b... they are top heavy but behind the screen no one gets near them.

i've been listening closely to them in 2 channel mode, using ipod and a subwoofer, they're 9ft apart and seating is 9ft back, toed them in some, sounds pretty good. i placed the centre horizontal but it really screwed up the sound, left to right was aweful, all three vertically works perfect as long as your seated.

Try standing up and then sit down and see if you hear the layered effect I remember. When you stand up you get hit with the bass from the upper set of woofers, it is kind of a neat effect, also pay attention to the area inbetween sitting and standing and you can here different tones etc. Then move around the room, this design really does fill a room up with sound.

the only changes that happen are the high frequencies are better when seated everything else you mention does not exist. when the centre was horizontal the left to right was really poor, but on axis was fine, so as long as i sat in the middle it sounded great, behind the at screen all 3 vertical sound great

That is kind of what I mean by layered, you get less high frequencies when standing and more mid/lower range, where as with the standard M80 it doesn't sound that much different while seated or standing

Try just the lowers and see what you think but I have no way of knowing how Ian put those together and whether or not the lower is as simple as a normal M80 or if he has the whole speaker rigged differently as you can have them set as 4 ohm or 8ohm and the standard M80 is 4 ohm so the crossovers must be linked etc.

I suppose from a home theater point of view, if you had theater style seating the rear/upper seating area would benefit from this style of speaker hmmmmmmm I might have to try this when I finally get a dedicated home theater.

sounds the same with either 1 or 2 hooked up. and since they are dedicated for theatre use i'm okay with that. i read somewhere someone had placed theirs on cinder blocks to raise them which gives the high end a bit more height... for presence, what about a pair of smaller book shelf speakers on top of the on top of, if you know what i mean.

From what I know, Axiom generally won't make that upgrade due to other component changes--it's not cost effective.

Both of those are cost effective, but Pro Amps like QSC, Behringer, Tapco ect offer the best bang for $$.

The specs for all of these amps are readily found online, but in a nutshell they offer considerably more power for the dollar than "home" stereo amps. Aside from the appearance of some of these Pro Amps(some are kind of industrial looking), they also are usually(not all) fan cooled which may or may not be an issue for you at lower levels in an HT setting. There are numerous forums online on either swapping to a quieter fan or attenuating the existing one. Still, if someone is adding this kind of power to your system, you probably listen at higher levels anyway and wouldn't hear the fans.

I have noticed that some of the pro amps have higher noise ratios than the home audio amps, which may lead to noisy/staticy sounds through your speakers during quiet times. This would not be a concern in a DJ situation.
From all my looking, Qsc appears to be the near the top of the pile as far as home audio specs in DJ amp and cost/watt.

I have a Behringer EP2500 that drives my m80 and I love the sound. The first time I cranked the juice up, I went to lower the bass of my sub but it was already off. Ten feet away from the speaker you could feel something on your skin when they were playing. With the stock fans it sounds like a normal PC. Maybe someday I will replace them but when we listen to music or movies it never bothered us. The only thing is that I also need amplification for my other 5 speakers, so I'm currently searching for a multichannel (5) amplifier. I paid around 350-400$ canadian. I did some test where my fronts were disconnected and I plugged a pair of QS8 on the amp. WOW, like getting new speakers. My wife told me in a matter of seconds that we needed an amp for the remaining speakers (4xQS8 + vp150) pics were posted over here: http://axiomaudio.com/boards/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showgallery&Number=258614

Just bite the bullet Luc and get the A1400-8 and all your amplification needs are taken care of. I really like to spend other people's money.

Now that's the kind of quality entertainment I expect from the Axiom Message Boards. Make sure to post the web links.

I wouldn't say they will play louder at 2 ohms as that only means the amps will achieve full power sooner on the volume dial due to the lower resistance. I would suspect the 2 speakers colocated similar to subs colocated would add 6db, yes/no?

Hey, when you get them, if you don't mind, can you try the UPA-2 with the M80s? I'm also curious about how hot it runs.
