Yes, how about the nerve of Lexicon. From what I've read, they dropped an Oppo BluRay chassis (without mods!) into a fancy Lexicon case and charge $3,500!!!

Probably won't get one of them.

Lexicon claims they made mods, Audioholics says their player tests exactly the same. Lexicon's player has a THX badge. Audioholics shows that it still has the 100 Hz crossover that 83 has, where THX says all speakers should be crossed at 80 Hz. Audioholics asks THX about this, and the Lexicon version disappears from the list of certified products THX website.

I would also need the player to be all-region to pay the premium.

According to Audioholics Oppo reported to them that Lexicon’s engineers did work with Oppo’s to improve some things mainly in video performance. However, those changes were incorporated into the stock BD-83.

The BD-83 has a region free mod so I imagine a mod will be made for the new one shortly if not already. My original Oppo is region free and I don’t have many out of region disks and can crack the region coding on my PC if need be anyway so for me it was a non-issue for the BD-83.

I have watched only one SD DVD on the 58" Panny with the LG350c as a source and it looked remarkably good. If this cheaper Oppo is as good and still gives me SACD, should I ever buy any, then I would be inclined to get one.

I've always wanted a DVD of David Lean's "Breaking the Sound Barrier," best foreign film winner 1952, which is not available in a US DVD. When I get a BluRay player it will probably be an Oppo SE. I hope it's region free.

Oppo's BD players are not, and will not be Region/Zone free.

But they can be modded.

I've seen the region mods for the BDP-83, but I'll wait until there are quite a few alternatively-regioned discs I want before I shell out the cash for a region-free player. I'm sure there will be more options by then.

Never fear, Lexicon is ALSO going to clone the new Oppo BDP80 with the appropriate "mythical" video and audio upgrades and introduce it as their new "budget" player for ONLY $2000!

$1999 to be precise. I have one but it's no better than the Oppo.
