The comparison chart for the two models was kind of big so you can find it Here. Still a lot of options for $289.00 if you feel you won't miss the ABT2010 video processor.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

I read they were coming out with one a while back, didn't know it would have been this soon though ... I wonder what's considered to be a home theatre 'large screen'.

That's pretty much the player I was predicting. It's a BDP-83 without the Anchor Bay chip, and a few small omissions, like the wired remote, and RS-232 port. I'd think a "large screen" is any that fills your field of view by more than 75%. This player doesn't have as good a scaler chip as the 83, so if your screen appears big enough, you'll notice the lower quality upscaling of DVDs. The BD playback quality should be the same. EDIT: Oh, it doesn't have the 7.1 analog out either. Good riddance, says the digital boy. EDITEDIT: I read that wrong, it has the 7.1 out, it just doesn't have the higher quality stereo out.

Is this because of the lack of DVD 24p Conversion? That's about the only major difference I can see. I don't know the difference between the various conversions. I wouldn't want it if it doesn't do decent DVD up conversion.
Edit: Perhaps I should just wait for everyone else's response.

I imagine it has "decent" DVD up conversion, just not as "stellar" as the 83.

Ok. Thanks. Now I know I want the 83. I have had my 83 for about a month now - The upconversion is stellar. I now can echo the comments over on AVS where posters say they first thought they would be upgrading their inventory with Blu - Standard DVD's look so good there is no reason to upgrade.

Oppo has also come out with an upgraded Special Edition BluRay player - substantial uprgades to its audio section.
"The Special Edition uses an 8-channel Sabre Premier DAC chip for its 7.1 multichannel output. The dedicated analog stereo output jacks use another 8-channel Sabre32 Ultra DAC chip stacking 4 DACs for each of the left and right channels to achieve even greater audio performance."
"Those who already own a BDP-83 purchased before Nov. 9 of this year can ship it to Oppo together with $299 and have the Special Edition upgrade installed. It will consist of replacing the Audio Board, Power Supply Board and the Back Panel with a RS232 port. The front panel is left untouched. This upgrade is only available to customers within the U.S. and payment must be made in advance. The unit’s warranty will be extended by resetting the clock; in other words the warranty starts all over again. You place an order for your upgrade at the Oppo site, and you then receive an email with an RMA number and instructions for sending in your BDP-83."
I'd love to get one of these.

If you like the 83SE, then you'll love the NuForce edition. NuForce is like a factory tuner for Oppo. The modification Oppo made to the 83 to turn it into the SE, were suggested by NuForce. There were some other mods NuForce put forward, but were ultimately shot down by Oppo as not being cost effective, and going beyond the point of diminished returns. So they were left for NuForce to implement themselves. Still costs less than half of what Lexicon was asking for their case-mod only.

AFAIK that offer expired on 31 December 2009 unless Oppo extended it. I will have to double check as I was considering it and then realized I missed out.
