Hiya,

Putting together a 14.5Lx16.5Wx10.5H 2,500cu.ft. dedicated HT room, so I'm pulling my B&W THX FCM8 LCR(3pc) & SCM8 dipoles(2pcs)out of storage for it. Thinking of driving them with either an Onkyo 805 THX ultra, or Rotel rsp1066/rmb1075 THX ultra combo. Regretfully I never got the matching dual passive B&W PCS8 subs, nor the B&W 800ASW subs, both THX ultra too, but i think 2 are required. Anyways, I've always wondered if my single EP-500v2 would meet or exceed THX ultra requirements for spl and frequency response for the room size. Waddya think?

Thanks a bundle!

The EP500 is a very capable subwoofer but not knowing the THX Ultra standards I couldn’t say if it meets them. Could you post a link to the THX Ultra standards? AFAIK THX is pretty tight lipped about their requirements.

I would not get all hung up on THX this THX that, having the THX logo (like on receivers) doesn't say the other non-labeled THX receivers would not qualify for THX. In regards to the 500, it is capable of 18hz in-room and capable of 120dB undistorted.

I doubt it would be possible to tell whether THX standards are met, unless THX has certified the equipment (for a hefty fee). But I'm not sure of that for THX Ultra, specifically. It's been one of the complaints about THX that they keep their requirements secret.

I can appreciate not getting caught up in THX, I share the same feelings. But... it would be really cool if money was no object to get THX to come out and certify your own personal home theatre. That would be a pretty cool plaque to hang outside the doors, I wonder what that would cost!

The way THX certifications go, you could probably just send them the check and they'll send the plaque saying you're certified.

About $20, just make your own plaque. No less valid than THX certification IMO.

You think like a Marine Cam.

Just make sure not to invite any THX employees over for a movie and I’m pretty sure you’d sail right under their radar.
