a. Optical out of the DVD player to the DVD optical slot on my Yamaha receiver (this is the cable lit red but you know that). What does this cable do ??
b. audio out cables from DVD player to DVD audio connections on receiver.

Umm... if I read that correctly... you've hooked up both the optical and analog audio cables?!? It's a "one or the other" situation... don't hook up both sets of audio connectors.

edit: the optical cable carries all your audio channels digitally to the receiver

unless you'd like to switch the input selection on the receiver back and forth to see if you can hear the difference between the two.

Bren is right, however, that you don't need both connected. I'd stick with the optical cable only, since that's the only way you'll get Dolby Digital and DTS.

Guys,

thanks for the help...I know these must seem like stupid questions. I did remove the analog cables, thanks.

The picture is still black and white with S Video running directly into the the receiver. Color when running directly into the the tube ? Should I try a new "S" cable ? I can't use the on-screen features from remote unless the "S" cable is running directly into the receiver. Thanks again for the response. The number of connections can be a little intimidating for a first time HT guy.

Vetteluver,

To diagnose the s-video black and white issue, try alternating cables alternately and connecting directly to the TV. If both cables work fine and give you a color picture, then you'll know the receiver isn't working correctly and you should get it serviced.

Alternatively, have you tried using the s-video monitor out on your receiver? You don't seem to have any component video devices other than your TV, and although your receiver does do component video upconversion from s-video, you won't see a large gain in video quality.

What it SOUNDS like you've done it taken only the luminance (part of the component signal - sometimes marked as Y) signal out of the receiver and plugged it into the composite in on the TV... or maybe misread the labelling on the back of the receiver or TV and hooked up the luminance to the right place, but messed up the R-Y and B-Y (chroma) patches.

Either way... you're sending only the luminance part of the signal, whether it's a misconnection on one side or the other, or perhaps a bad cable set (but assume operator error first, especially if you're new to HT)... component video takes three 75ohm cables to work, composite takes one.

And for future reference... you can do this INTENTIONALLY to watch something in black and white, I've pulled the chroma patches on a signal we were looking to broadcast in B&W for that retro feel.

Black and White is so much more emotional in my opinion. Whenever I do any serious photography, I always use B/W.

Hi,

I agree, DJStunna. I always worked in B&W when I had my own darkroom and enlarger. Age-old argument, of course. Color used to be disdained by serious art photographers. I've moderated my views somewhat, but I still find great B&W still photography somehow more compelling. I really hated it when the Museum of Modern Art accepted those stupid color Polaroid snaps as "Art" back in the '70s. I think the "artist" 's name was Eagleton, or something close to that.

I believe you're thinking of William Eggleston.
