Yeah CV, I'm anxious awaiting the new Elder Scrolls as well. I'll probably buy it on PS3. My computer isn't really suited for gaming and I think I will choose PS3 over xbox 360.

I've been an Elder Scrolls fan since Daggerfall was out on PC in mid to late 90's.

Yeah, Skyrim is a definite buy for me. I will have Gears of War 3 to keep me busy before that release. When it rains it pours.

Right now I am playing Fallout: New Vegas (Honest Hearts DLC) and Crysis on the PC.

I’m armed and I’m drinking. You don’t want to listen to advice from me, amigo.

Well I hope I just got past that part, the asteroids? If not I’m going to be really pissed off because I hated both parts of that mission. I was ready to quit but then just barely got by it. Only a few minutes later to get ganged up on by a bunch of baddies and decided I’d had enough frustration for one day.

On the good side this has to be the most immersive game I’ve ever played. With few exceptions, the store and occasional cut scene it never takes you out of gameplay. No mini-maps or stat lists or anything else to clutter the screen. All is displayed as part of the player’s suit or in the form of pop up holograms while the player is still active. Even the map clues and accessible item clues are integrated into the environment. Add to that the sound clues and this is and 11 out of 10 for immersion, nothing I’ve seen touches it.

The controls are actually surprisingly easy to learn for a shooter, though mastering them is proving difficult for my spastic hands.

As for gameplay my main issue is the mission I mentioned above. Totally takes you out of the gameplay and I hope they don’t repeat it in DS: 2. Also, initially I was a little pissed at things coming at you from all sides with seemingly no warning but the audio cues until I realized where they were actually coming from allowing me to recognize what areas were more likely to be dangerous.

My second issue with gameplay is when they throw you into a situation where you really have no choice but to die the first time to learn what you must do to survive. Sort of irritating but I guess understandable when used to introduce new baddies. And the game does give you hints as how to beat some of them.

Also the gameplay becomes much easier by referring to the map. Often it shows you a save point right around the corner you might have otherwise missed, and if your path does happen to pass a save point there is a reason.

One minor game mechanic irritant is that you can’t use something unless it’s in your inventory. Numerous times I’ve come across a health pack I want to use right away but my inventory is full. So I have to drop something, pick up the health pack, use it and the pick back up the item I dropped. I wish there was a way to use the item w/o “equipping” it.

So far this is both a very fun and very irritating game. I’m finding it’s not something I can marathon so far because something comes along to frustrate me and I just have to take a break. That’s the only real issue I’m having with the game so far.

I agree with you guys on the asteroid thing--that part was frickin' hard and I was ready to walk away. Fortunately, the rest of the game was so good I buckled down and willed my way through that part.

Overall, I was really impressed with the production values on both games. Top notch stuff.

And, Dean, I share your frustration with the inventory.

Yep, it was the asteroid thing. Other games have done it too me too, both Ocarina of Time, and Xenosaga 1 had stealth missions thrown in. Please developers, don't drastically change the play style for one mission in the middle of a game. I'm playing an RPG because I don't like stealth action titles.

Anyway, I just got Catherine, without knowing anything about the game other than it was from the creators of the Persona series, which I love, and it's their first PS3 title. I was expecting the usual dating sim stuff, for the personal interaction, but figured it would be dungeon crawling between the plot points. Color me shocked when I was confronted with a Qbert like puzzle. I wasn't good at Qbert. But I'm making do on the Easy setting.
