I have not done a search to see if there is a good answer readily available to my question, as I'm not sure how to search the question or necessarily even how to describe the issue. So, I thought I'd ask for some general guidance.

I've noticed while watching all of my teams lose in the NCAA basketball tournament that when game action is being shown at a bit of a distance (i.e., when the camera is panned back a bit), parts of the picture get "blurry." It's hard to describe, but it's like the players get blocky or the pixels don't look right. It's almost like the TV can't keep up with the action or something. However, it doesn't ever happen on close up views. I've adjusted various settings on the TV and receiver, but nothing seems to help.

My questions are these--notwithstanding my bad description, any idea what the term for the problem would be, so I can try to research it? Also, is it safe to assume that this is likely an issue with the TV, as opposed to the receiver or the connection?

If it matters, the TV is a Pioneer Elite 101fd (plasma), connected to a Denon 2310 via HDMI.

Ray, I don't think it's your TV. Chris will be along shortly to give the correct answer, but I'm betting it has to do with compression (likely motion-based compression) of the signal by the distributor or original broadcaster....

I've seen it too, mostly with NFL games.

Oh! I doubt we can do anything about your team loosing. Was that your question? I often get Internet motion blurr on some posts!

Shouldn't be anything wrong with that TV. I don't think it even has any controls which could make things look bad (mostly noise reduction in some models, which will blur fine, fast moving details). It's almost surely your cable company skimping on costs, and over-compressing the video signal to squeeze more channels in less space.

Atleast your Ravens are looking promising these days. Flaco seems like a franchise QB and well Ray Lewis is just one bad MOFO....amazing leader and the most intense football player I have witnessed.

I guess you could be looking at an interlaced signal ? They tend to give a difficult-to-describe unpleasant effect during fast movement.

Last I heard a mix of 720p and 1080i was being used depending on the content (or on the station, I forget), not sure if that is still the case. Anyways, action + interlaced HD = funny effect.

Thanks everybody. It makes me feel better that it is not the TV or any of my connections. Bridgman--the problem only has arisen when the source I am watching is 1080i, so that seems like a good call. The TV itself is 1080p, but it sounds like that wouldn't help what you are pointing out.

And Dr. House, I am bullish on the Ravens. Flacco seems like the real deal, as does Ray Rice. And as my user name would indicate, I am a huge fan of Ray Lewis. If we can get some halfway decent cornerbacks, we can make some noise next year.

They are building a talented young core of players in all the correct spots. They should be able to address the cornerback situation in the upcoming draft. What other positions are needed?

The signal is the signal, it's coming across as 1080i, it doesn't matter what the supports. In fact the Kuro's have excellent de-interlacers, but they can only work with what they're given. CSI at 1080i turns into a very nice stable picture. But that's because it was shot on film. Live sports are shot with video, and that doesn't de-interlace cleanly.
