Hello kayizm,

Good-quality generic cable is fine--just make sure it's thick enough to keep cable resistance to 0.3 ohm or less. You can do that by selecting 14-gauge or 12-gauge cable. (As the gauge number becomes smaller, the cable is thicker.) For example, 22-gauge cable is like telephone wire--very thin. For short runs of cable, 6 to 8 feet or so, you can get away with 16-gauge cable.

Others on the boards here will tell you where you can buy inexpensive cable--AR, Recoton, Radio Shack, etc. If you want to use branded cable like Monster, it's okay. The cable is fine but you'll simply pay more for the same copper.

I use Phoenix Gold TI-122SB, 12 guage, very thick PVC outerlayer, 2 conductors, twisted, each conductor has 7, 8 bundles, each bundle has may be 20 strands (I didn't actually count, all estimates). I only found 250 ft spool for about USD 135 (plus 16 for S&H).

Here is a retailer who sells by foot

Phoenix Gold has two other 12 guage cables, non-twisted, in 50 ft spool.

M-1250 in the $23 - $25 range

QS-1250 in the $20 range

I also read positive reviews on Carol Brand 12 gauge sold by Home Depot or Parts Express

The color of the outer jackety for Phoenix Gold TI-122SB (or "Musical Reference") cable is clear, the jacket is very thick, it doesn't show in the picture posted by the etailers but the diameter of this cable is about 20 - 25% bigger than the coaxial cable for satellite dish.

I have this cable for about a month now, it beats the RCA brand I had before, it produces more details and clearer sound. It's a good quality, inexpensive cable, the only draw back is the length one has to buy.

I don't have experience with the other two Phoenix Gold cables but specualte their performance would be similar to this one.

Kayizm, Alan gives you good advice and expanding on his point that the resistance of your speaker wires shouldn't be greater than 0.3 ohms, note that the resistance of standard 16 ga lampcord is about 0.008 ohms per foot of run. This is therefore suitable for runs up to at least 30 feet.

Don't fall victim to the exotic wire racket.
Save your money for something which will make an audible difference in your system.

I agree with Big

Phoenix Gold speaker cable is very inexpensive and very good. I have their 12 Ga silver series OFC, and it's just excellent. I hear some Monster for 3.50$ a foot, and it was the same as the Phoenix Gold at 75 cents per foot. I HIGHLY recommend Phoenix Gold. You can buy it online at partsexpress.com and 123av.com

if you live near a StereoPlus, they have it in stores for very low prices.
