Hey, at least most recievers can't be turned up too high when turned off anymore (ie, the volume controls are electronic...). Apparently, when I was a (very small) child, I would turn up the volume all the way on my dad's Marantz 2220B (which I still have-anyone know of a good repair shop in SF Bay Area?) and change the tuner to a country music station. Then run away screaming when the thing was turned on...

Are you sure you only did that when you were a child Ken?
What's your new standard for today?

The highest I've listened to my H/K while I was in the same room with it was probably around -20. Not for very long, either. And NOT country. Well, ok. A little country. But not much. Really! Dammit.

Wife is pissed, Chess (I think she's mad at you). I went to give those Silver6s a listen and like them quite a bit. The veneer didn't really turn my cookie, but the bass from those small towers was prodigous! Top end was smoother than m60s, but they didn't seem very loud and they didn't seem to have the same wide soundstage of the M60s. They made the Veritas 2.4s sound like wooly, muffled crap in the same store.

I'm really really sorry Bigwill.
My wife has been glaring at me ever since i went on my own hunt for a high powered stereo amp for the Tannoys. I know what it is like, believe me.

But those Monitor Silver series...they just sound darn good. What can i say other than gee, i would LOVE to hear the Gold series!
Monitor Audio makes a great speaker.

As for all speakers though, give them some good power and volume is not a concern. As for soundstage well, i cannot say the room i heard them in was all that well designed to really test out the soundstage.
I've had problems placing my M60s too though. I would say both speakers really need some space.
If you liked the S6s, you would probably enjoy the S8s too. Again more bass than Axioms (probably place the S8s more in line with the M80s) but it is a larger tower as well, more similar in size to the M60s.

As for the Veritas, well they did sound like a well made speaker, but i much preferred the high end of the Monitors. I may have to go back again just to dream.
I'm out of places to build any new stereo systems. Hmm, maybe our next house will have a third room of some kind for equipping.....

Actually, now that I think about it, those were the S8s that I was listening to in the store - $1499/pr US. They had the Golds as well, but in a different room. The veneer on the Golds DID turn my cookie. Very nice. The room they were in was made to simulate a typical dry-walled family room with a couple of door-sized holes cut out in back. As such, I can't say they sounded particularly better than the S8s. Seemed a little harder, a little brighter, but that could have been the room. Also twice as much money.

I haven't heard the Golds but i certainly would love to hear them next to the Silvers.
That would be a tight, tough review i think.

Hi,

given that I can have a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 6 for $795 what would you recommend me to buy - MA or Axiom m60?

Thanks,
Dmitry.

The Silver 8s were pretty smokin'. Didn't listen to the 6s much.
If you buy the Monitors then are you going to go all Monitors for HT? Gonna get pretty pricey.
Get M60s and you can get QS8s that will blend seamlessly w/ your mains.

Interestingly enough, I found this dealer on the Monitor Adudio's web page and they were wiling to bring a pair of S6 to my place for audition!! And I wasn't going to buy a full HT setup at once, only the mains for a start (I have some old speakers to use temporarlily for surround). The price plus ability to audition them at home is tempting... Hmmm... Choices, choices...
