As a newbie to this site, I apologize if this topic has already been covered. With my RX-V440 (a 6.1 system), Yamaha suggests placing all 3 rear speakers on the rear wall, but on Dolby's website, it shows the surround speakers (rear right, rear left) on the side walls. I'm getting a new house built next month, and as I want to hide the speaker cables during construction, I want to get it right from the start!! All suggestions and criticisms will be appreciated :-)

I would suggest going with Dolby's guidelines and mounting the L/R surrounds to directly to the sides of your listening position -- especially if you have (or are going to have) Axioms QS8 or QS4 surround speakers.
Most discrete surround effects in movies are not meant to be localized. If you place all your surround speakers behind you, that would ruin the effect, as you'd redily be able to hear all surround effects coming from behind you.

Welcome, David. As Peter suggests, if you have one(or preferably two)rear surround speaker, there's no need for the side surround speakers to supply a "back" effect. Therefore they should be directly to the side of the listening position.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.
