Can someone tell me whether it makes a difference whether I play SACD over HDMI or through component? The reason I ask is because I'm looking at buying an inexpensive SACD player and need to decide between the OPPO 981H and the Denon 1940CI.

To be honest the only reason I am considering the Denon is because I have the Denon 2809ci avr and another Denon product would look good on top of it. As far as I know they both play SACD and DVD-Audio. Any thoughts on what I should do? I certainly don't want to sacrifice sound quality for the sake of having another denon product. The convenience of HDMI is also appealing to be since I hardly want more cables bwhind my equipment.

Most likely your AVR cannot do bass management if you are using 6-ch analog input. In that case, you might prefer the LPCM over HDMI as all your AVR settings (including room correction if you are using that) will be available.

Most (all?) AVRs also do not do bass management for DSD "bitsteams" from SACDs. The Oppo can convert DSD to PCM when sending it over HDMI so the receiver can play with it properly.

Sounds like a good reason to go for the Oppo then.

FYI, my Onkyo 805 was doing bass management with DSD. But it had loud popping sounds on track changes so I always used LPCM.

Most receivers which seem as if they are doing bass management with DSD are turning it to PCM first, and then performing the filtering.

I've never seen DSP algorithms for any sort of signal processing on DSD. The only thing I know any equipment does is time alignment for speaker distances. Oh, it is also possible to do a little dynamic range expansion by increasing the size of each "step".

DSD is not a manipulation friendly format.

A blinding flash of the obvious?

I'm not sure what you're asking.

There a few ways receivers handle DSD:

1. They don't, PCM only.
2. DSD with time alignment, speaker trims only, no bass management.
3. Optional bass management by converting to PCM, otherwise a "direct" mode which does #2
4. Ones that convert DSD to PCM badly (your Onkyo isn't unique) when asked to do any processing.

I'm a broken record, but players should output PCM. That way it doesn't matter what new compression formats are invented in the future. Just give the receiver some number of channels of linear pulse code modulation and let it do its thing.
