WUP, the "typical" heights are based on "real world experience".

since i don't own any yet, i can't give you that "real world experience" (which i would think would be a little different for everyone) but the manual says

"Placement / Positionnement
Quadpolar surround speakers in a 5.1 system will sound their best and produce the greatest sense of envelopment in the surround soundfield if they are to each side of the listening area (see diagram) rather than on the rear walls, and from 1 to 5 feet above the level of seated listener’s ears."

I do plan on getting a pair of these great surrounds for side surrounds and i plan on putting mine 3' to the bottom of the spaker from my ear level. hope tht maybe something here helped. of course i wouldn't mind hearing from other on this either.

good luck with the "real world"

2 feet above seated ear level is my recommendation.

QS8's are quite forgiving(by design), 2-4' is probably optimal with ceiling clearance taken into account, imo. Every room is obviously a little different.

Half of communication is listening. You can't listen with your mouth.

i have a slightly unrelated question about the QS8 installation. the wall bumpers i'll gather are "stick on" devices that attach to the speaker? it says in the manual to place them on the bottom L & R of the speaker. will this ruin the finish and if you ever needed to take them off (for whatever reason) and have any of you used the bumpers and if so what do you think of them. personnaly, i would have preferred to have had threaded holes made into those areas where the bumpers would go and the bumpers have short threaded sections to attach to the speakers for easy removal and it would also come with little black plastic blank caps if you chose not to use the bumpers.
anyone have any thoughts or comments? i am curious to hear the views of others.

The bumpers have a rather mild adhesive on them. I don't see myself ever not using them, but I wouldn't worry about removing them. If anything a little goo remover might be needed. Also they go on the back side of the speaker, not a commonly seen part.

cool, i meant the bottom L & R of the back. also another question thought is that you need the bumpers so that you can get your cable behind the speaker to connect into the jacks. are the binding post indented enough (working with the way the bracket is designed and the bumpers) so that banana plugs will connect without hitting the wall? i notice on some bi & di-pole speakers that folks complain about not having the ability to attach banana plugs to them without them hitting the wall. again, that where i figure the bumpers come in to act as spacers giving you that extra bit of cushion of space for banana plugs and cable to fit behind the speaker without it actually resting on them.

did that make sense?
