I was wondering if anyone here has ever built their own sub. I am tinkering with the idea and have been on avs and home theater shack trying to learn as much as I can. I was also wondering if you can use different subs together to smooth out response. I would like to build a big boy sub that goes very low. I was also wondering if anyone has ever taken an ep 500 and built a bigger box for it. Would this help it out? Will it help with its extension or will it hurt the amp? If anyone has built one what would you recommend.

I wouldn't mess around with the amp/driver from the 500 in a different box. Ian's already done all the research so you're not going to improve it.

I think the Shack is a pretty cool resource.

If you're using multiple, different subs in the same room, you'd probably really benefit from one of those SVS or Velodyne EQ boxes.

So you can use different subs together. Good. I wasn't planning on pulling mine apart. I just wanted to know if anyone here had done it. I would like to try and build one and also use my 500 with it. I am not in any way disappointed in my 500. It is very nice. I am just more interested in doing something myself. NOW I have no knowledge and will be learning as I go, but that is the fun of it.

Thanks Tom

Hey, there are lots of people much more knowledgeable about this than I am. But I am sure there are people out there successfully using multiple subs from different manufacturers in the same room.

I like to learn!

I had a custom jl sub built for me. Check out audioholics as they have a lot of info on building subs.

Here's the link to the sub build I had done for my by annunaki who actually lives pretty close to me.

I am slowly gathering the pieces together to build my own sub(s).

Sure you can mix different subs together. It probably depends on the room as much as anything how effective that will be and how much EQ you will need.

I wouldn't bother with the EP500. First, you have no idea what the driver or amp specs are so have no way to properly model the system. As Tom pointed out, Axiom has already optimized the sub for this driver amp/dsp and cabinet combination.

Hometheatershack.com, avs.com and diyaudio.com are the three places I would go to learn about building my own sub.

Someday I'm hoping to have the time and money to experiment with building all of my own speaker systems. I've read one book on it so far.

Hey catbrat. From what I have read, the bible of speaker building is The Loudspeaker Cookbook by Vance Dickason
