Here's another idea. This particular product is overkill for what I need, but it looks like you can switch pairs of speakers on and off and it has variable adjustment rotary knobs for volume control.

This product allows for 2 stereo inputs (I only need one for Left and Right channel, although it could also be used for surrounds if one wanted to) and 5 stereo outputs (I only need 2).

Just a thought.

I have a feeling that'll impact the audio performance poorly.

It really isn't a good idea to attempt to adjust the volume after the power amplifier.

You're probably right, but how else could I decrease the volume in 1 pair of speakers where 2 pair of them are wired in parallel?

I may not even need to, but am planning in advance just in case.

Could you use an in-line attenuator? I believe they usually come in 3db increments.

From checking around on the internet, I don't think I can use an attenuator. It seems to mess with the impedance.

Please excuse me for not reading back further in the thread where this is undoubtedly covered, but can you wire these up as a zone two or zone three off your receiver to accomplish separate volume control or does the physical layout prevent the extra wiring?

With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

Have you looked at an L-pad as a possibility? They are usually used to "tune" individual drivers in a speaker. Maybe one of the engineery guys can comment.

Nope. Using 2 pairs of speakers for Left and Right channels. Zone 2 is stereo only from a different source.

An L-pad is what is used inside of the volume controls designed for HT speakers. It has 12 steps. Now, if I just know how many decibels were adjusted per step.

Edit: At least that's what I understand by internet reading.

I just thought I'd point out that for the past 2 weeks, I've been running the Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH at 4 ohm for the mains by having 2 pairs of 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel. At least, I think that is right.

I was wondering if it would support 4 ohm speakers, so the answer to that is yes.

I've been studying up on comb filtering and was wondering if perhaps having 2 pairs of mains may be causing the problem when I moved an SPL meter just a few inches during the playback of a single tone I got as much as 20db in sound difference. I was 8-9 feet back from the speakers.
