Hello,

I am interested in purchasing a pair of Millennia loudspeakers for my family room/kitchen. The room is 34' x 13.5' x 8' (459 sq ft, 3672 cu ft) with hardwood floors and no draperies. It is trisected into roughly equal thirds by a sofa and a counter. The AV stand is in the corner farthest from the kitchen counter, 6-10' from the sofa. This purchase will be the first installment in a planned 3.1 system. The receiver is a Denon 1802, 80W/channel.

Two questions:

(1) Keeping in mind the sofa and counter, which would be better: towers or bookshelves on stands?

(2) Which particular Millennia model would be the most cost-effective option for this room? I am looking for the least expensive option that will deliver quality sound to the entire room at modest volumes.

Thank you,
Rob

Hello Rob,

I'll assume by your reference to "3.1" that you are planning to add a subwoofer. If that's the case, the Millennia M22ti's on stands will deliver the smoothest and most spacious sound for your money. Keep in mind that the M22's bass remains solid to 40 Hz, and in the interim it accepts 2 or 3 dB of bass boost with ease, but eventually you'll need to add a sub if you're interested in filling that large a space with a nice foundation of deep bass.

Thanks, Alan. Yes, I do plan to add a subwoofer eventually. (I hope to add rear speakers someday, too, but that raises ticklish issues of long-term interior decorating.) Now all I have to do is wait for the M22s to appear in the outlet! Rob

Hi robdarst,

I have it on good authority (Amie) that the factory is doing a run on M22s and there is a one-time only waiting list for Outlet blemished M22s if you call Axiom at 866-2294-6688. I believe this run is the cherry finish. By the way, it's not a holiday in Canada today.

Many thanks for the tip--I'm on the list! One last question: What is the best height at which to mount the M22s? The SS16 stands are lovely (my wife would definitely approve), but isn't 16" a bit low? Thanks, Rob

I'm not Alan, but I do own a pair of M22's.

The SS16 stands are perfect. I was also a little skeptical at first. What you won't believe is how tall the M22 speakers actually are. On top of the SS16 stands the top of the M22's measures 36 1/2" off the floor. This is taller than my previous JBL tower speakers!

The SS16 puts the M22 tweeters at a great height. Enjoy your purchase.

Thanks for your reply! Am I correct in assuming (given that the official weight of the SS16s is a mere 4 lbs) that it is possible to fill the stands with sand or shot? (Quite apart from any auditory considerations, my rambunctious young boys will surely knock them over if not!) And what do the SS16s have for toes? Spikes, or something more hardwood-floor friendly? Thanks, Rob

Hi robdarst,

The 16-inch stands I'm using (a pair of old metal ones I had kicking around) bring the M22's to just the right height for my couch or armchair. Will post again re the foot/spike matter.

Okay, robd, here's everything you wanted to know about those SS16 stands. You can open the top and bottom of the supporting tube, but get a plastic bag and fill the bag with sand or shot, then form it into a kind of shaft, because it has to go inside the tube next to a rod that goes through the tube to connect the top and bottom of the stand. You can sort of wrap the sand-filled bag next to the rod and shove the whole thing into the tube.

Rubber feet are supplied along with spikes, so use the rubber feet on the nice hardwood floor, or, on thick carpet, the spikes, to steady the stand. The spikes or feet (or sand or lead shot) in no way influence a speaker's tonal quality.

Well I guess Alan took care of most of your questions. The SS16 stands are very light, but the triangle footprint makes them fairly stable. I am using the metal spikes on a carpeted floor. I have a crazy cat that hasn't managed to knock them over yet (key word is yet), so with a little extra weight they should be okay for your boys.

Enjoy!
