Hey All

Couldn't find an answer with the Forum search... Do most Sub Manufacuters rate their subs wth in-room response?

Looking at getting myself a sub (finally) and I'm comparing the EP350 and EP500. I noted in the Specs the EP350 has anechoic response down to 28Hz and In room to 18Hz. Is this correct? Comparing to other products on the Market, 28Hz seems... lacking for a 12" Sub with a 300W Amp. Or do most use the In-room measurement and I should be comparing to 18Hz.

There is no Graph in the Specs section for the EP350! Grrr!

Thanks

I usually guess most sub measurements are in room as many do not have the facilities to do open air ground plane or on a tower as Axiom uses.

Unless otherwise stated I expect that manufacturers would quote the most optomistic response, which is in room.

That 18 Hz for the EP350 is the -9db point. In my room I get a flat response down to about 21Hz, but my walls and ceiling are concrete, so I get about as much room gain as is possible.

The EP350 is certainly more than enough for any music, and quite impressive for movies.

the best way to test a sub is outdoors, not in an anechoic chamber, which is why Axiom uses a tower out back of the plant.

Ok. That Tower video is really cool. I mean I knew Axiom valued sound quality and would design their tests for accuracy, but thats hardcore!

How important is DSP..i.e. EP350 vs. EP500? I realize that the 500 is more powerful...I'm thinking about a room at about 2000 cu ft & listening to music in stereo.

Hi Captain,

DSP in the EP500 will make the sub's overall frequency response smoother--more "linear"--with fewer bumps and dips than, say, the EP350, which doesn't have DSP. The 500's DSP also extends the EP500's deep bass a bit lower than the EP350, and I heard that slightly deeper and more powerful bass in the double-blind tests. However, I recall writing down on the scoring sheet that the 350's deep bass with pipe organ was almost as excellent as the EP500's. Just a hair's-breadth difference.

DSP also prevents the EP500 from being over-driven into potential damage because the DSP chip is programmed to "know" the amplifier's and subwoofer's maximum output capability, so it limits the amp and driver's output just short of where damage might occur.

Regards,
Alan
