After reading much on avs forum, I have decided to order axiom speakers for my new (being built) living room.
It is going to be a 7.1 set-up mainly used for movies but also some music. The room is ~14' x 18'8". Ceiling height is 8".
All speakers will be in-wall installations and I was thinking of M22 in-wall for LCR and M2 in-wall for the rears and surrounds.

The left and right will be mounted vertically under the windows, whereas the center will be mounted horizontally under the TV which is also mounted on the wall.

I will have a separate sub which is not in wall. I going to use my old marantz SR-18EX receiver to power this setup for now until I can afford to upgrade.

You should only use a M22 as a center if you can mount it vertically. If you want to use a horizontal center, use a speaker that is designed for that purpose - either the VP100 or VP150.

That should be a wonderful set up for that room! Which sub are you using? Make sure you have a capable one; the M22's deserve it.

Personally, I was not blown-away by the move from 5.1 to 7.1, but I am using QS8's as surrounds. I think you'll be just fine with the M2's. People are going to try to talk you up to the QS series, though.

Your placement in the front is probably going to be driven somewhat by proximity and relationship to your display. Shoot for tweeters around ear level relative to your listening position for L/C/R. For the surrounds, I think that 1-3 feet above ear level is about right.

I don't think I can add much to what Tom said. If you have QS8s at the sides you could probably be quite happy with 5.1... with direct speakers (like M2s) at the sides then going for 7.1 will probably make more of a difference. The center channel carries a fair amount of signal with most movies so a bigger center is probably a good idea (ie think about VP150)...

Tom is right, I am going to try to talk you into getting QS8's for sourounds. Esp. for movies. I haven't heard any one ever complain about them.

Ditto on Tom's comment regarding 5.1 v. 7.1. With QS8's it is not such a noticeable difference. Also agree on the VP150 for a horiz center.

Thanks guys. QS8 are not an option since this has to be strictly an inwall setup.
I think I will go with the VP100 which is the only speaker available as an inwall.

How much are you reducing the profile of your surrounds going to the M2 on-wall? The QS series are pretty low profile and a much much better speaker for surround duties.

I am going to use M2 in-wall. That's virtually zero profile.

I had another idea - how about mounting all three (L/C/R) M22 in-walls horizontally?

Are there any disadvantages of that?

Other than it won't sound right?

Its really not a good idea to mount a speaker in an orientation it was not designed for.

Edit: I wasn't sure if Axiom was still offering the inwall. I guess zero profile is just a little better than the QS speaker.
