AFter reading much as i could from these and other forums, i have made the decision that i will buy axiom's for my new HT. Despite reading matny threads, i still am left with 2 critical questions. Please advice as i will need to place an order today in time for a Thanksgiving day get together.

HT area desc: HT i am setting up is in my basement using a epson 8350 projector and a pioneer 1020k a/v receiver. listening/viewing area size is seating at 20' from screen ; 14' wide; 9' hight; carpeted floors.

Selected Components: M22 front; v150 center; reuse older polk sub; yet to decide on surrounds.

Questions:
1: Bookshelfs are out due to kids/WAF etc. Should i go with inwall/onwall M22's or just onwall M22's? Aziom customer service is recommending inwall/onwall as they have a bigger box and better sound etc. I am leaning for the onwall only as i have flexibility later and do not have to cut drywall. Which one would you recommend? if the inwall/onwall is so much more better, i do not mind cutting drywall etc.

2: The way my walls are setup etc, i have to mount my surrounds on the ceiling. i am tempted by the QS but sacared about the size of them. Since my ceiling is at 8feet 8 inches, i am very worried about the sheer size of the QS speakers.
And i will have to buy the mounts for an additional $50 each which has a bad affect on budget. Are there any other comparable surrounds like the polks or anything else which are not so big and can go on the ceiling? surrounds are not in budget at this time, but i am tempted because of the 5% discount when i buy 5 speakers.

Please advice. Cannot wait to end this chapter of my HT saga.

1. Since you have a sub, on wall M22s will be just fine if keeping flexibility is important to you (it would be to me!)

2. QS-8 is where Axiom's shine the most compared to competition. I have 2 of them ceiling mounted and they are very sturdy. What is you concern exactly? There's also QS-4, which are smaller.

A bit of grandfatherly advice.

Don't make this significant a decision with a gun to your own head because of a family get together deadline.

There will be penty of opportunties to share your awesome system w/ family and friends.

It's not a post-doc fellowship appplication deadline, afterall. To get what one really wants, sometimes deadlines have to fall by the wayside.

I would go with the in/on walls for superior midbass. I would also go with the QS8s over the QS4s, having recently made that transition.

my # 1 concern in chhosing the QS 8 or 4 is the size and how they will look mounted to the ceiling. Did you buy the mounts offered by axiom? Do you have any pictures for your surrounds?

bobkay: you know how it goes.. Without a target, i keep researching forever. I have made my decision to go with m22's. Just not sure what other might have experienced with inwall/onwall versus onwall.

On #1

Another option rather than use in/on walls is to go with the on walls and bump up the crossover from the standard 80Hz to a little higher to let the sub carry more of the midbass assuming your sub is in the front of the room with the speakers. I’ve not heard the in/on wall compared to the on wall so I can’t say how much mid bass performance you would really achieve at 20 feet since midbass is best produced near to the listener. To get the midbass where I like it with my M80s I need to sit about 8 feet away if I’m listening at sane volumes (I can feel the midbass outside if I turn it up loud enough). Out at 12 feet where my seating is the midbass drops off substantially and even with my tower speakers I let my sub handle as much of it as I can.

On #2

The QS8s don’t really look that imposing. Hopefully someone can find some ceiling mount pictures to post. Also there are other less expensive options that might work for mounting. For example some of the Monoprice wall mounts might be retasked to work as ceiling mounts.

They may even sell ceiling mounts.

You could also use a short drop rod for a ceiling fan or even a very large L-bracket painted to match the speakers or ceiling.

Cheers,
Dean

Concerning the M22 on-wall. I've used both these and the bookcase M22's. I have the in/on wall VP100, but it doesn't make a good comparison. The M22 on-wall have good mid to high end, but seriously lacking in the bass department. The only way I liked them with just the M22 on-wall and the EP350 was to run the M22's as Large without a crossover cutting out any of the bass. Using an 80 hz or higher crossover made them sound even thinner.

Now, having said that, they are good quality speakers, but you really have to play with all of your available settings in order to get the sound that you want. After I did all of the above, I added the bookshelf version back to the mix for a composite sound of both of them together, using 80 hz crossover. This provided a much more pleasing sound to my ears and to visitor's ears.

So, you have neither side walls NOR rear walls where you can mount QS8's? That must be a helluva room smile

No disagreement here. I think Axiom has ceiling mounts if you need them. They are of VERY high quality. Get the QS8's.

Personally, I'd get the inwall/onwall. Physics and all that.

I'm calling BobKay "Pappy" from now on.
