Has anyone any advice or experience regarding heat and fan speed with the Sony PS3 Slim? I recently purchased the 320GB Slim w/ Move Bundle. I've only been able to play a couple of discs but I've noticed that the unit gets very hot and the fan becomes extremely loud. For example, I watched the Avatar BluRay yesterday - so I ran the unit for 3 solid hours. When the movie finished the PS3 was quite hot to touch and the fan was blowing extremely loud - loud enough that it was very noticeable with the volume reduced to room level and with it sitting in my entertainment unit behind a closed door. I also noticed this once before when running a Dora the Explorer DVD - but that time the unit was up-converting the DVD so I assumed the video conversion/scaling was the reason for the heat. I didn't think a simple BluRay would cause this.

The unit is in a closed door entertainment unit but has a lot of free space around it and seems to be well ventilated. It is sitting horizontally and not standing vertically. I don't have any cabinet fans for cooling but may consider adding them.

Is this normal? I wouldn't think playing a BluRay for 3 hours should cause it to heat up so much that the fan has to run that loudly?

Thanks in advance for the advice. I'd like to know whether or not this is normal before returning it for a replacement unit. Other than this I love the PS3?

Bryan

I haven't had any noticeable fan noise with my Slim, but my launch PS3, also behind a door (even with the back of the stand open), would kick the fan into high gear all of the time. If I had the door open, it always stayed quiet. I'm using open shelving these days for my components, and my Slim is always quiet. Using fans to get circulation on your PS3's space may be the way to go, but I'm definitely not the expert on putting that together.

If it is in a closed area it isn't well ventilated. The PS3 moves a lot of air, and will eventually heat up any enclosed space (my launch 60 gig plus a plasma TV heats my living room).

But even that hottest of the PS3 doesn't run the fan on high when watching BDs (grainy DVDs, and games will kick it up a bit). Mine sits on an open shelf.

Get some more air flow to the system.

My slim doesnt get very hot, even with continued use. I have an open back for the cabinet its in though, so maybe you should put it somewhere with better ventilation?

Also, if you just got it, you could consider taking it back and getting a new one. Always a possibility to have a defective unit.
