To the point of being bastardized?

Broad statements like that are problematic IMO. I've seen far to many examples where words from the Urban Dictionary have supplanted a proper word. I think language is jeopardized when foolery can sneak in, but most importantly when it stagnates development.

Virtually everything is dynamic, but just because it is, it certainly doesn't justify every change.

Where has the proper word been supplanted, though? On the internet, where speech is typically casual, full of colloquialisms? Sure, I'm annoyed by common grammar mistakes and mis-used words as much as the next guy, but until I see such mistakes and bastardizations in common use in edited material (newspapers, magazines, books, etc), then I'm not too worried. There have been different "classes" in language for as long as there have been functional divisions within societies.

I'll decide what I like on a word-by-word basis. I won't deny myself a new word just because it's new. If I like it, prepare to hear it. Ha ha.

If language IS fluid, then one should be worried all the time. It's being a witness to the changes that makes them hard to bear.

I freaked when impact became a verb.

Now I freak because the comparative is disappearing. It's not crunchier, it's more cruchy. It ain't prettier, it's more pretty.

And I would like to receive a check for punitive damages each time a national news person says "incidences."

Someone in Seattle dies a little each time anybody says "expresso".

But they typically welcome it, because they're already so depressed from all the rain.
