"cant touch this"? what? Bob?

This makes me think of Bob Kay riding around in a teal camarro a few years later listening to his Vanilla Ice cassette.

I have seen very few concerts. But I did see Hammer in Portland, ME. 2 legit 2 quit. Boys 2 Men opened.

Halfway through the show my friend looked at me and said very sadly: "Hammer just doesn't have it any more"

I've recognized at least one band mentioned in this thread so far. The Beatles.

Ooooh, great thread topic!

Gotta agree with you on People are Strange.

The number one game changer for me was Neil Young, Helpless. It got me to pick up the guitar and to realize how powerful words could be.

Dylan, subterranean Blues

Frank Zappa, anything. I never liked most of his stuff, but it really opened my eyes as to how you could define music.

Yes Fragile. Complicated, powerful Classical meets rock 'n roll

Kieth Jarret, Diatribe. Again, complicated, disjointed on the surface, but really not. He opened up a whole new genre to me.

And one of my all time favourites...

Pink Floyd, Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict. Who needs rap.

Great song, great music video.

It's hard for me to remember what songs had that kind of effect on me. "Zombie" by the Cranberries is what got me to listen to them. I was pretty unaware of music as a whole back then. I listened to some, including TMBG, but I really hadn't pursued listening to any. It was just sort of there. I went gung-ho for the Cranberries for several years, and it's probably that first experience that has forever made me lean toward female artists.

Here are some other songs that at least inspired me to look further into the artists. It's hard for me to call anything a game changer, though.

"Smooth Criminal" as covered by Alien Ant Farm

"Sad Song (Pacific!)" by Au Revoir Simone

"What's a Girl to Do" by Bat for Lashes. What a great music video, too.

"Big Time Sensuality" by Björk. Another great music video. Or maybe I saw/heard "Human Behaviour" first, which is another classic video.

"The Distance" was probably the first Cake song I heard.

"Road Rage" was probably the first Catatonia song I heard.

"Let's Make Love and Listen (to) Death From Above" by Cansei de Ser Sexy

I hated Garbage at first. Shirley Manson sort of annoyed me. I don't remember why or when I finally decided I liked her, but it may have been "Special" that won me over.

"Gypsy March" by Grande Ole Party was a lot of fun.

I wish I had the credibility of really being familiar with her music beforehand, but like most people, I only took notice after Kimya Dawson's music was heavily featured in Juno. "Loose Lips" was a nice introduction.

"Obsessions" by Marina and the Diamonds. I'm so glad her career took off. I can't wait to hear more of her awesome weirdness.

"Too Little Too Late" was the first Metric song I heard, but I think I fell in love with them after I heard "Empty."

Had to listen to more Peaches after her song, "F*** the Pain Away," was featured in Lost in Translation.

Easy to love The Proclaimers after hearing "I'm Gonna Be."

"1816, The Year Without a Summer" by Rasputina

"Us" by Regina Spektor. Okay, so that was obviously one of my defining moments. I still get chills when I listen to it. She's funny and weird, but not at the expense of emotional depth. There's such feeling there.

"Tamacun" by Rodrigo y Gabriela

"Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor. Another one with a music video that won me over.

"I'll Kill Her" by SoKo

"Lover's Lane" by Squirrel Nut Zippers. Not my favorite song of theirs, but it was enough to get me interested.

"Summertime" by The Sundays

"You Wouldn't Like Me" by Tegan and Sara

"Hitten" by Those Dancing Days

"Time to Come (NYC Remix)" by Tigarah. I can listen to this one anytime, still.

"Blood Roses" by Tori Amos is the first song I remember liking by her. I know Boys For Pele was at least the first album I heard by her, thanks to my sister.

"Buddy Holly" by Weezer. Windows 95 CD-ROM, thank you.

Sounds like the title of a '60s Fellini film

I'd like to say Nirvana, but I thought it was total crap when I first heard it.

Man, I'm way over my head here in classic music knowledge. But here's a mashup of two classic bands refreshed a little with new sound...some of you might like it.

The Kinks/The Beatles/LCD Soundsystem. I think it brings a cool dimension of each song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPtWh5XjiH0

BobKay's mention of the Kink's "You Really Got Me" reminded me of this.

P.S. Cam, RATM is awesome, that song and album are among my favorites!

When I heard rap and Led Zep together, screaming F---, no! I won't do what you tell me! I was hooked, too!

Interesting to see commonalities in choices.

Lemme try to finish the 60's:

12:30--Mama & Papas
R & R's not supposed to get that beautiful

6 o'clock--Luvin' Spoonful
Same as above

Lightening Striking Again-- Hmmm? Lou Monte or Chris Montez?
Don't think for one minute that Freddie did "operatic opus" first.

Center of the Mind--Amboy Dukes
Before Ted N. took himself so seriously.
Killer!

Good Vibrations--Beach Boys
'nuff said

I'm sure I'm leaving out a few. The cement of R & R was poured in the 50's, set in the 60's. These artists showed up with heat guns.

Next free moment---the 70's. Such a dissed decade, somuch g-r-e-a-t music!

Good call on Nothing Compares to You, Charles.

Bob, any 60's list should have some Byrds music in it, imo. Like any decent group, you know their 'sound' immediately. Same with CCR, I'll go with "Who'll Stop the Rain", Oh! and Nights in White Satin Moody Blues.

All Right Now by free would be on my 70's list.

Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, BTO.

Bennie and the Jets, Elton John.

Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Cats in the Cradle, Harry Chapin.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot.

Frampton Do you Feel Like We Do?

ZZ Top, I Thank You.

Guess Who, No Time.

Supertramp, Bloody Well Right.

Foreigner, Hot Blooded.

David Bowie, Fame.

...still thinkin', lots of good tunes that stand out in the 70s.....

Oooohh!!....Dico Duck!!

laugh laugh crazy
