I've never written these in any list before, but these are the songs that hit me so hard right out of the box, that they changed my thoughts on music forever. Sometimes, even changed me.
The Peppermint Twist--Joey Dee and the Starlighters. They out-Checkered Chubby. That's what grabbed me.
I Saw Her Standing There--Beatles How could you cram that much R & R in 2:48?
I Thank You--Sam & Dave Electric keyboard got the main riff.
And Your Bird Can Sing--Beatles Still in my top 5 from them. I'll stop Beatles here. Too many I could include.
Cool Jerk--The Capitals Sit still for 2 consecutive seconds. I dare you..
Pictures of Lilly--The Who Guitars stopped being "guitars" forever. Got to see 'em do it. Still goosebumps--right now.
Pictures of Matchstick Men--The Status Quo OK, so I liked Incense and Peppermints, too! Kill me!
Hungry--Paul Revere and The Raiders The beginning of American riff rock.
Good Luvin'--The Young Rascals You can do that with a Hammond? I'm gettin' one.
Looks like it's gonna take me a while to get out of the 60's. Sorry.
You Really Got Me--The Kinks What I wanted the Stones to sound like. Thanks Ray. Victoria got my attention, as did others.
People are Strange--The Doors So melodically and rhythmically strange, too.
Rattlesnake Shake--Fleetwood Mac Dirty R & R don't get much better.
I Feel Free--Cream WTH is that Jack Bruce guy doing? And that Clapton guy? John Mayall, I don't need you anymore.
Purple Haze/Waterfall--Jimi Like anyone could even think of a reason then. None needed.
Bluebird--Buffalo Springfield Wow! See what you can do with stereo?!!
I Got a Line on You, Babe--Spirit By no means their best, but it gave me entree. Love Randy California.
I'll pause at this one:
Communications Breakdown--Led Zep How is this even possible. I gotta witness this. I did. How is that even possible!!!!!!?
Add-ons, from any decade (I'll get there, I'll get there) eagerly anticipated. Jack's (Ajax) take would be very interesting, as it predates mine.

I envy you for having been able to experience the 1960s firsthand.
Cool thread. My thread will skew later, understandably. The old stuff I got into long after it came out.
---
Can't Get There from Here - R.E.M. Got it in college in the 1980s, then got all their earlier albums. What had I been missing in my own backyard?!
Hemispheres - Rush You mean this song has been going on for 4 minutes and nobody's singing yet?! Such musicianship!
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who These guys can really rock! I always preferred them to the Stones as far as that rivalry goes
The Wall (album) - Pink Floyd I actually saw the film first. I cried when the rat died.
Today - Smashing Pumpkins How does he get that guitar to make that perfectly fuzzy sound?!
Buddy Holly - Weezer Perfect nerd pop.
The Evolution of All Things - Rilo Kiley Hey, there's still good music being put out? Thanks, pmbuko's mix CD!
Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.

At least a couple of those would make it onto my list as I progress. Since "being there when..." is all I've got now, I'll brag abour hearing Pictures Of Lilly as an encore to their Who's Next tour.
It's still the "best" (most satisfying) R & R show I've ever been to. Led Zep's 1st tour 2nd.
And if you had been there in the sixties, you'd be seeing more doctors now than patients. Imagine trying to write all those scripts with RA.. Horrifying.

And I forgot Ain't Superstitious--Jeff Beck w/Rod. Now THAT was NOT to be taken lightly, ever! Nor was Rock My Plimsoul. Oww!

Also:
American Idiot (album) - Green Day I was a fan from their breakthrough album, Dookie, and I saw them on tour for the Warning album. Then, they just elevated their game to a godly level for this one. And 21st Century Breakdown ain't no slouch either.
Dreaming - Blondie. Such (over)drumming by Clem Burke. They had a great sound.
Dare to Be Stupid - Weird Al Yankovic. He is really a genius.
U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer The single most infectious song I have ever heard.
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea is a mad bassist! He's also the reason why "Bust a Move" by Young MC would make this list.
Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.

Running Scared - Roy Orbison
Some of my earliest memories as a child are of my father blasting this song on our "Hi-fi". The anticipation and build-up towards the end still gets me every time.

We used to have extravagant Semi Annual State of the Business meetings. We had our meeting at the local coliseum and we had the drumline live. It was awe inspiring.

I was gonna be more specific. I kinda think albums would be another thread. Such a list may or may not include the killer songs, but may trump on concept, consistency, etc.
In this case, you needn't even know who the artist was, whether new or long gone. You didn't care. You just had to run out and find more of this stuff.
Song is the cause, album is the effect.

A band that has had more impact on my life than any other, is Rage Against The Machine; they literally paved the path for my expanded consciousness, philosophical and overall life transformation. I wouldn't be who I have evolved to be if it wasn't for my accident, because otherwise I wouldn't have devoted the time to research their lyrics and the meaning, which is why I've said in the past I wouldn't change anything. After coming home from the rehab hospital, I started listening to their music, and reading their lyrics online, for the duration of the day, to the point that it drove my parents nuts . The lyrics to every song are ingrained in my head, along with, most importantly, the meaning. From listening to them, I started reading Chomsky, then Bakunin, John Stuart Mill etc. etc. Sure, there's many other artists that have had an impact on my life, but none come close to Rage Against The Machine. Ultimately, we're all in control of the changes that we make, but there's usually a precursor, and that band is it for me. My response isn't quite in line with the rest of yours, but that's a common theme with me . I'll follow suit and compose a list of songs that are also "game changers", when I have more time. Peace and love, guys!

"Don't Let's Start" - They Might Be Giants.
Opened up not only a whole new band for me (They've put out over a dozen albums in the last 25 years), but a whole new genre of music. Aside from the Beatles, TMBG was the other band that influenced me to learn to play guitar, so I could play their songs.

Peace and love, guys! Just leave hair gel off your list, please. Unless it's some sort of Canadian song I'm unaware of. Your feelings are exactly what I'm on about. Bang on, even! Just want you recall the song of theirs that first grabbed your windpipe and dragged you further in.

"Don't Let's Start" - They Might Be Giants. Nice! I thought about them as one of my favorites, but didn't have an "AHA!" moment with any of their songs. I sure do like them, though. Now, my son gets to like them, too, with their ABCs and 123s releases.

Just want you recall the song of theirs that first grabbed your windpipe and dragged you further in. Take the Power Back . Lyrics (hide your kiddies )- Bring that shit in! Uggh!
Yeah, the movement's in motion with mass militant poetry Now check this out...uggh!
In the right light, study becomes insight But the system that dissed us Teaches us to read and right
So called facts are fraud They want us to allege and pledge And bow down to their God Lost the culture, the culture lost Spun our minds and through time Ignorance has taken over Yo, we gotta take the power back! Bam! Here's the plan Motherfuck Uncle Sam Step back, I know who I am Raise up your ear, I'll drop the style and clear It's the beats and the lyrics they fear The rage is relentless We need a movement with a quickness You are the witness of change And to counteract We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back Come on, come on! We gotta take the power back
The present curriculum I put my fist in 'em Eurocentric every last one of 'em See right through the red, white and blue disguise With lecture I puncture the structure of lies Installed in our minds and attempting To hold us back We've got to take it back Holes in our spirit causin' tears and fears One-sided stories for years and years and years I'm inferior? Who's inferior? Yeah, we need to check the interior Of the system that cares about only one culture And that is why We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back Come on, come on! We gotta take the power back
Hey yo check, we're gonna have to break it, break it, break it down Awww shit!
Uggh!
And like this...uggh!
Come on, yeah! Bring it back the other way!
The teacher stands in front of the class But the lesson plan he can't recall The student's eyes don't perceive the lies Bouning off every fucking wall His composure is well kept I guess he fears playing the fool The complacent students sit and listen to some of that Bullshit that he learned in school
Europe ain't my rope to swing on Can't learn a thing from it Yet we hang from it Gotta get it, gotta get it together then Like the motherfuckin' weathermen To expose and close the doors on those who try To strangle and mangle the truth 'Cause the circle of hatred continues unless we react We gotta take the power back
Yeah, we gotta take the power back Come on, come on! We gotta take the power back
No more lies X8
Uggh!
Yeah!
Take it back y'all Take it back, a-take it back A-take it back y'all, come on! Take it back y'all Take it back, a-take it back A-take it back y'all, come on!
Uggh!
Yeah! That sums 'er up .

"cant touch this"? what? Bob?
This makes me think of Bob Kay riding around in a teal camarro a few years later listening to his Vanilla Ice cassette.
I have seen very few concerts. But I did see Hammer in Portland, ME. 2 legit 2 quit. Boys 2 Men opened.
Halfway through the show my friend looked at me and said very sadly: "Hammer just doesn't have it any more"

Ooooh, great thread topic!
Gotta agree with you on People are Strange.
The number one game changer for me was Neil Young, Helpless. It got me to pick up the guitar and to realize how powerful words could be.
Dylan, subterranean Blues
Frank Zappa, anything. I never liked most of his stuff, but it really opened my eyes as to how you could define music.
Yes Fragile. Complicated, powerful Classical meets rock 'n roll
Kieth Jarret, Diatribe. Again, complicated, disjointed on the surface, but really not. He opened up a whole new genre to me.
And one of my all time favourites...
Pink Floyd, Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict. Who needs rap.

"Don't Let's Start" - They Might Be Giants.
Great song, great music video. It's hard for me to remember what songs had that kind of effect on me. "Zombie" by the Cranberries is what got me to listen to them. I was pretty unaware of music as a whole back then. I listened to some, including TMBG, but I really hadn't pursued listening to any. It was just sort of there. I went gung-ho for the Cranberries for several years, and it's probably that first experience that has forever made me lean toward female artists. Here are some other songs that at least inspired me to look further into the artists. It's hard for me to call anything a game changer, though. "Smooth Criminal" as covered by Alien Ant Farm "Sad Song (Pacific!)" by Au Revoir Simone "What's a Girl to Do" by Bat for Lashes. What a great music video, too. "Big Time Sensuality" by Björk. Another great music video. Or maybe I saw/heard "Human Behaviour" first, which is another classic video. "The Distance" was probably the first Cake song I heard. "Road Rage" was probably the first Catatonia song I heard. "Let's Make Love and Listen (to) Death From Above" by Cansei de Ser Sexy I hated Garbage at first. Shirley Manson sort of annoyed me. I don't remember why or when I finally decided I liked her, but it may have been "Special" that won me over. "Gypsy March" by Grande Ole Party was a lot of fun. I wish I had the credibility of really being familiar with her music beforehand, but like most people, I only took notice after Kimya Dawson's music was heavily featured in Juno. "Loose Lips" was a nice introduction. "Obsessions" by Marina and the Diamonds. I'm so glad her career took off. I can't wait to hear more of her awesome weirdness. "Too Little Too Late" was the first Metric song I heard, but I think I fell in love with them after I heard "Empty." Had to listen to more Peaches after her song, "F*** the Pain Away," was featured in Lost in Translation. Easy to love The Proclaimers after hearing "I'm Gonna Be." "1816, The Year Without a Summer" by Rasputina "Us" by Regina Spektor. Okay, so that was obviously one of my defining moments. I still get chills when I listen to it. She's funny and weird, but not at the expense of emotional depth. There's such feeling there. "Tamacun" by Rodrigo y Gabriela "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor. Another one with a music video that won me over. "I'll Kill Her" by SoKo "Lover's Lane" by Squirrel Nut Zippers. Not my favorite song of theirs, but it was enough to get me interested. "Summertime" by The Sundays "You Wouldn't Like Me" by Tegan and Sara "Hitten" by Those Dancing Days "Time to Come (NYC Remix)" by Tigarah. I can listen to this one anytime, still. "Blood Roses" by Tori Amos is the first song I remember liking by her. I know Boys For Pele was at least the first album I heard by her, thanks to my sister. "Buddy Holly" by Weezer. Windows 95 CD-ROM, thank you.

Man, I'm way over my head here in classic music knowledge. But here's a mashup of two classic bands refreshed a little with new sound...some of you might like it. The Kinks/The Beatles/LCD Soundsystem. I think it brings a cool dimension of each song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPtWh5XjiH0BobKay's mention of the Kink's "You Really Got Me" reminded me of this. P.S. Cam, RATM is awesome, that song and album are among my favorites!

When I heard rap and Led Zep together, screaming F---, no! I won't do what you tell me! I was hooked, too!
Interesting to see commonalities in choices.
Lemme try to finish the 60's:
12:30--Mama & Papas R & R's not supposed to get that beautiful
6 o'clock--Luvin' Spoonful Same as above
Lightening Striking Again-- Hmmm? Lou Monte or Chris Montez? Don't think for one minute that Freddie did "operatic opus" first.
Center of the Mind--Amboy Dukes Before Ted N. took himself so seriously. Killer!
Good Vibrations--Beach Boys 'nuff said
I'm sure I'm leaving out a few. The cement of R & R was poured in the 50's, set in the 60's. These artists showed up with heat guns.
Next free moment---the 70's. Such a dissed decade, somuch g-r-e-a-t music!

Good call on Nothing Compares to You, Charles. Bob, any 60's list should have some Byrds music in it, imo. Like any decent group, you know their 'sound' immediately. Same with CCR, I'll go with "Who'll Stop the Rain", Oh! and Nights in White Satin Moody Blues. All Right Now by free would be on my 70's list. Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, BTO. Bennie and the Jets, Elton John. Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody. Cats in the Cradle, Harry Chapin. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot. Frampton Do you Feel Like We Do? ZZ Top, I Thank You. Guess Who, No Time. Supertramp, Bloody Well Right. Foreigner, Hot Blooded. David Bowie, Fame. ...still thinkin', lots of good tunes that stand out in the 70s..... Oooohh!!....Dico Duck!!

I'm sure anyone in their 40's remembers well, the growing disdain for 'Disco' in the mid late 70s. My school was completely segregated between the Rockers and the Disco..uh..'ers. East side of school, rocker hangout...west side of school, disco hangout.

I'm sure anyone in their 40's remembers well, the growing disdain for 'Disco' in the mid late 70s. My school was completely segregated between the Rockers and the Disco..uh..'ers. East side of school, rocker hangout...west side of school, disco hangout. I remember tons of "Disco Sucks" banners, painted on sheets, at lots of mid-late 70's rock shows. Imagine just how gross those sheets must have been for college students and hippies to see them as expendable??? And, yes, love the Byrds. Among best of 60's? You bet. Not on topic for me, though. Doesn't matter how great, it's not on THIS list if it didn't snag-me-hopeless. It's not, "Oh, these guys are great!" It's What and Who TF is this and where can I get more more of it, now!" First listen---song's not even finished yet---gotta have, gotta have. Byrds didn't do that for me. Remember, I'm old, so Dylan got there first. Had Dylan 45's. Deeply appreciated his "need" amd gigantic influence over everything. I just couldn't bear to hear him to his own songs. OK. Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, maybe, yes.

And I think you're all confusing Dico Duck with Rico Suave.

P.S. Cam, RATM is awesome, that song and album are among my favorites! Yeah, dude; it's on of the best rock albums of all time. Have you seen them live? I have, and it's something else!

I keep wanting this thread to be about something that swaps disks out of my Xbox 360 so I don’t have to get up during a multi disk game.

They're possibly coming out with a new album this year, and they did play a few times last year, so here's hoping!

::runs away screaming:: One winter in Banff I lived next to a guy that blasted that as his wake up song every morning. I can't think of a song I hate more.

What about Disco Duck, Fred?

That one is cool. Didn't have to listen to it every morning for 3 months.

When Zach Braff put "The Only Living Boy in New York" on the Garden State soundtrack, it woke me up to Simon and Garfunkel. I'd enjoyed their Greatest Hits album for years - decades, even - but had never gotten their individual albums. I did after hearing that song.
Now the refrain is selling 2011 Honda Accords ...

I'm nothing if not persistent.
The 70's:
Downpayment Blues--AC/DC How can a guitar and a voice both sound so dirty? And they never forgot---it's only Rock and Roll.
O Lucky Man--ELP They must have reverse engineered a spaceship!
I've Seen All Good People--Yes C'mon! Everybody in a single band can't be THAT good.
Desperado--Eagles Gorgeous! Not bad by Linda R., either.
Now I'm Here--Queen Whoa! First huge re-invention of R & R since Zep.
Dancing with the Moonlit Night--Genesis A fresh breeze of prog rock.
Aqualung--Jethro Tull Reaons unnec.
Surrender--Cheap Trick Always fall for the R & R purists.
Allison--Elvis The beginning of a life long affair.
NY State of Mind--Billy Joel Sinatra can be made new.
Someone Saved My Life Tonight--Elton Love from the beginning, but this one raised the bar.
Couldn't I Just Tell You--Todd R. Should have included Open My Eyes--Nazz, in my 60's.
Wild West Hero--ELO Chord changes still get me, everytime.
Rubber Bullets--10cc Couldn't have know what better times were coming from them. Stuck with 'em 'til the end.
Maybe I'm Amazed--Paul McCartney I was. Boy, that didn't last long.
Can I tell You Something--Kansas Hold on! American Prog Rock?!?
Whew. This is overwhelming. I'm having so many flashbacks. They just don't make orange sunshine like they used to.

Nazz. I forgot all about them. I had some of their music back in the 60's.

I also like the S&G song, America, on the Almost Famous soundtrack. An anthem, for sure. Slaughtered by Yes.
