This may seem like a silly question but it's something that's been bothering me. I noticed that when I turn up the volume on my Yamaha receiver, the volume meter numbers go down. When I turn up the volume, shouldn't the numbers go up?

Let's say I'm watching a movie and the volume is at 35, to turn up the volume the meter will go down, 34,33,32,31. This is driving me nuts? Why, why oh why?

That's the way the numbers are supposed to go with 0 being reference.

Seems to me if zero was reference it would be zero volume as in null. But I'll take your word for it lol

It's using a minus dB scale. Zero is "reference" volume level. Reference means, the level at which it would be played in a professional venue. When you are playing below reference you're in the negative range.

This is the "relative" display. There is probably a menu option where you can change the volume display to "absolute" if it really bothers you, in that case the numbers will go up when the volume goes up.
