Hi all,

I've used the search and read some great ideas on placement but thought I would throw out a more specific question. I am setting up a 5.1 system and my main viewing area is a couch on the rear wall with a 58" Panny plasma about 10'-11' in front of it centered.

I was planning on putting the Q's on the rear walls about 2' above ear level, but the manual that comes with them and some of the posts I've read receommend the side walls. If I place them on the side walls, they can't really be behind the listening position. Originally I was planning on placing the right Q sort of above the HVAC thermostat you can see in this picture and the other in the same spot on the other side.

You can't see it, but the left has the same side wall area for mounting (although instead of a doorway there is a fireplace). So mounting them on the side walls is just as easy as the rear walls, I just want to make sure I get it right the first time and don't have to fish wires through the attic/walls more than once.

Having said all that, any advice from the experts?

Oh by the way the Q's will be friends with a VP150, M60's and an EP350 driven by an Onkyo 807.

Thanks in advance! grin

Scott

I have a similar situation as you. My couch is a few inches from the back wall and I have a brick fireplace on one side and an opening into the kitchen on the other.

I mounted my QS8's against the back wall with the supplied T-brackets. They are spread out a couple of feet more than my mains and about 6' off the ground. While this is not ideal I find that it sounds very good. I still get surround effects that sound like they are coming from the sides as well as sound effects coming from behind me when both Q's are working to produce a surround effect. They are up high enough that I also get the feeling of things overhead such as helicopters, etc.

Overall I would say that the QS8's are VERY forgiving with placement. You won't have any problems at all.

Scott, the QS manual also states that rear wall placement is effective. The main point is that the surrounds in a 5.1 setup are side surrounds, not back surrounds, but placement on the back wall spread almost(say 6" away)to the side walls gives a mainly side surround effect when the listening position is almost up against the back wall. Placing the QSs there and about 2-3' above ear level gives excellent results, with them adding a little phantom back surround effect in the absence of actual back surround 7.1 speakers.

My setup is also similar. My QS8s are on the side walls about 4" from the rear wall and 24" from the ceiling. When I'm on the couch the center of the speaker is (horizontally) about even with my head.

And they sound great!

I have the same set up but i purchased the stands, now everywhere im reading the Qs8's should be 2-3 inches above ear. With the Qs8's on my stands they are at ear level is that too low?

RJ, I think that you mean 2-3 feet above ear level. Yes, the ideal is to have the surrounds about at that height, but you have to do the best that you can with the limitations that your room may impose.

My QS are also on the back wall, pretty much exactly the same as David and I also think they work very well there.

yes i did mean feet. Seems odd the axiom stands are not higher then. I may have to try mounting on the back wall. Last night was my first night with my new system so i still have lots of playing to do smile

Hi rjxox,

The height of the QS8 stands was chosen for stability reasons. Any higher, and rambunctious children and big dogs could easily knock them over.

The compromise in performance is very slight.

Alan
