I've asked this on a couple other forums so I thought I'd ask it here too. smile
I am looking for a digital music solution for my stereo. Something similar to what Olive offers only affordable.
Things I want:
LCD screen for viewing album covers.
Digital outputs and or analog if the device has a good dac.
I have no interest in wireless setup.
At least 100GB storage

I have come up with using an ipod classic running lossless files through the Ipure-20 ($328 total)

Does anyone have any other ideas that would be in the same price range? Thanks

I use a Logitech Squeezebox Touch, $300. It can be run wired-only and that is, in fact, how I have mine set up.

You can connect a USB drive to it for storage, but most people store their music files on a PC or NAS. You then run a server app on the PC/NAS and stream the music to the Squeezebox.

There is a Wiki and a very active forum.

Henry have you ran your Touch wireless at all? I'm wondering if you can tell much of a difference between wired and wireless? I have both a Classic and a Touch and am running both wireless through a Linksys E3000 with excellent results.

Was that you who recommended the Vortexbox appliance?

Like Henry says, usually the most economical way of doing this is using a NAS or dedicated media PC and running Airport Express, Squeezebox or Sonos systems to name the 3 most common ones. They're all scalable and offer different features at different price points and can support different configurations (PC control, iPhone controls etc...)

What Dan said. Airport Express will be your cheapest option, allowing you to use your existing Mac/PC. Pair that with an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad as your remote w/ the free Remote app and you've got a very solid system. Sonos can do the same but it ain't cheap. Bear in mind that the Airport Express does have optical out.

I've run it wireless and it works great. If you're concerned w/ interference, run it at 5 GHz and separate that band from your normal wifi at 2.4GHz.

Yeah, I keep forgetting about the Apple fans. If you are a Mac person with iTunes, iPhone, iPad, etc., then go with the Airport Express.

I ran my Squeezebox Touch wireless initially for a month or two. Never had a problem with that, and did not notice any difference when switching to wired. As long as all the bits get from the PC/NAS to the Squeezebox fast enough, it doesn't matter.

Wireless is more susceptible to interference (dropouts) than wired, which is why I went wired. With a reliable wireless network you are unlikely to ever have a problem though.

+1 for a Squeezebox.
Mine is hooked to my PC, it's always on anyways. I use wired, but just because I had an Ethernet jack exactly where it sits. Optical to my receiver, because it's there, and I use the very excellent iPeng app on my Ipod or my wifes iPad to control it from anywhere in the house or out on my deck. Basically anywhere my WiFi reaches.

Airport Express units are cheaper but for me, Apple does not support FLAC files, which most of my music library has been ripped to.

Edit:
I should also add that it's open source so there are lots of custom add ons to play with. I've played with a lot but currently maintain one that does call display on the LCD screen and another that allows me to view classical music by Composer, Conductor, Orchestra, etc. Classical music can be a pain to organize with just your normal sorts of Artist, Album, etc.

Thanks for the thoughts. I had looked into a squeezebox with a USB stick 64gb for storage. I'm trying to look at the pros and cons of that vs the ipod/pure setup. Thanks
