My system currently consists of Swan Diva 6.1 stero's, Swan Center and Axiom QS-8s in the rear way back. I currently use a Outlaw Audio 1050 with the center and fronts amplified by a Parasound HCA-150o and one Outlaw Audio monoblock for the center.

I am finally upgrading my receiver and am looking hard at the Onkyo 5008, Denon 4311 or the Marantz 7005 but that is a different decision, however, all these receivers support at least nine channels so my question is:

Do I leave theQS8s on the back wall and buy something like the M3 or M2 on walls for the sides or should I put the M3s on the back wall and put the QS8s on stands on the sides. I am limited big time on space and appearance on the sides and back. The sides will not be the same spacing back due to locational limitations, is that okay.

Also, I have a pair of Diva 3.1s that sit on top of my cabinets about 9 1/2 feet up that arent used currently. Do you think they could be used for spatial sound for two of the 9 channels?

I tried to attch pics but don't know how, I sit about 13 feet back and the back speakers are about25' back, the room width is about 13'.

Thanks,

Welcome.

Don't worry about 9.1 and save your money. The good thing is you already have a 7.1 setup so wall mount the QS8 on the side walls for surrounds (5.1) and wall mount the Diva 3.1 bookshelf speakers where the QS8's where on the back wall for the "surround back". The QS8's don't need the same spacing as they are non-directional so they are perfect there on the side walls. You also want the QS8's as side surrounds instead of surround back because you will want them to get the majority of the surround portion of the soundtrack. As for the Diva's they are more than adequate to use as surrounds with the Diva front soundstage.

My only problem is that the Swan 3.1s are huge and there is no way they wall mount with my space limitation. I haven't measured the 3.1s lately but one 3.1 is about the size of ten QS8s. So they stay up there unused, used if it makes sense or I will sell them.

To get to a 7.1 I will need new speakers but it sounds like you suggest to put the QS8s on the sides and get new rears. I could get the M3s or QS8s for the rears but the M3s look better with my tight set up.

Also, I now only have 5.1 due to the old AV and I want a new AV receiver with switching and 7.1 minimum, etc.

If you can't wall mount the the 3.1's, these would be my choices for best performance. Definitely go with the QS8's on the sides though.

1) QS8 (sides), QS8 (rears)
2) QS8, QS4
3) QS8, M22/M3/m2(doesn't matter)

OK, thanks, probably will need the QS8 stands for the sides.

I guess I could try the 3.1s as height speakers since they are virtually ready to go.

If the stands will be a problem or you don't like the WAF of the stands by all means wall mount some bookshelfs or on-wall. The most critical of the surround speakers are the side surrounds in a 7.1/9.1 setup. A pair of QS8 will give you the best performance in theory as surround backs but the surround back speakers are the least crucial of all the speakers in a home theater setup. Very little content goes through there and it is not very critical and demanding content either.

You could definitely use the 3.1's in a 9.1 setup if you like.

I don't know much about the "height channels" but I will give it a shot with the 3.1s.

If the QS8s are definitely the way to go for the rears as well as the surrounds I may just get them. The QS8s I have now have been awsome at both the sides a while back and now in the rear with no sides.

I second BJ's suggestion of QS8's all round. Maybe you can use the 3.1s in another system/room or sell them for $ towards the Q's.

I will try the 3.1s as height channels and if I don't like them for that use I will sell them. Not enough space in other rooms for them either.

Thanks.

Tob, the QS8s are still side surrounds in a 5.1 setup even if they're mounted on the back wall. For best results they should be positioned directly to the side of the listening position or slightly(maybe 2')farther back. Repositioning the QS8s should be done.

If you want to use the 3.1s, they can be positioned as back surrounds in 7.1. Placement could be on stands along the back wall or possibly you can experiment with placing them on the floor there and firing up toward the ceiling.

Any further changes, such as height or wide speakers, can be left for later.
