I am looking to purchase one of the Radio Shack 'sound level meters' in prep for positioning my recently purchased Axiom speakers. Any recommendations as to whether it should be an 'analog' unit or a 'digital' unit ? Any advantages or disadvantages worth considering especially if one is a novice in this area (i.e. accuracy, ease of use, etc. ? The price is only $10 more for the digital so I am not too concerned with that factor. Thank you in advance to all who respond. Regards, Paul.

I've got both and prefer the digital. It's got more cool features (like max and min) and is easier to read IMHO.

Anyone ever tried the Craftsman one from Sears?? I have a $25 Sears gift card that I was thinking about using towards that.

I just got a new SVS PC-ULTRA sub and in the manual they say use a analog meter versus digital. They even go so far as to list Rat Shack's part # 33-4050

Well since I'm ordering from South Africa, the shipping on the Rat shack SPL meter works out to $25. Anyone know if the parts express SPL meter is any good?

I didn't know Sears offered a SPL meter. I, like Monstermile, have a Sears gift card, so I'm very interested to hear any opinions out there.

Hi,

Usually the analog meters are easier to get an average reading (use the C-weighting scale on the Radio Shack) from than digital meters, which fluctuate up and down in a less intuitive manner (every driven a car with one of those stupid digital speedometers? If you have, you'll know what I mean. . .).

i finally had the time to pull out the analog spl meter yesterday. i replaced my vp100 with a 150 a few months ago, and also mounted just above the plasma under the top of the ent center. most of the vocals were then too loud coming from the 150. got the receiver manual out again and after about 40 minutes figured out where the setting for the mains were. while my wife was yelling at me, calibrated them to near perfection. when finished, and the two of us watched "sex" in PLII, i asked her if she could now hear the 3 fronts more balanced....she said no..augh. it now sounds better than ever. luckily, she'll be out tonight when i get home, and i pitty the kids if they're home. as an after thought, calibrating the ep350 was a picture rattling experience.

Alan (Axiom) recommends Analog
SVS recommends analog
M&K in their LCR750 THX manual recommends analog

I bought an analog Multi-meter for the same reasons.
The features of digital meters are nice but long term I think you would prefer the analog version. (I have owned and operated both)

Sorry for the late post, I'm new to the site and as I search for stuff I am weighing in late on some threads. Did you ever get a meter? If not and you know that shipping should be less than $25 dollars, I will see if I can get one locally and put it on ebay for you so that we can do our transaction and then I will ship it per your instructions.
