i have a bid in right now on an Axiom auction for a pair of M50's. Am a little nervous (what have I done?) but am hoping to win the auction, and then I look forward to getting the speakers. My goal was to have the great sound I now enjoy from my M3's, but without feeling the need for a subwoofer. I have a really small listening room.

No worries, the addition of the extra bass driver along with substantial increase in cabinet size will supply you with all the extra bass you will need for your space requirements.

I've thought about adding a pair of M50's to what I already have. Do you think this would sound better than what I have?
LR currently: M22 bookshelf + M22 on wall. (See sig line) LR proposed: M50's + M22 bookshelf mounted on wall above M50's. C = vp150 + M2 Sub = ep350

So! I hope to be receiving them pretty soon. Got some major room re-arrangement to do, and actually I have to decide which of 3 small rooms to put them in. Seems every appropriate wall is messed up by a closet door or a window with an AC unit in it. I need to figure out how far from the wall they should stand while playing, and then what the shortest recommended distance from the speakers would be, for the sitting place. (chair, couch, etc) Reading to do! ps: I have to say that for me to buy a SECOND pair of speakers form the same co. - that says quite a lot.

Thanks and will do! got my shipping notice already, so I wish my new speakers safe travels as they are moved down from Canada to the heat of Florida.

I dunno, the last few weeks my weather station has recorded hotter temperatures in Ontario than what the forecasts are reporting in Florida. Scorching heat (feels over 100) with high humidity and extremely high UV. No rain during that period either. This morning is not so bad though but the sun is not out in full yet.

It's been really miserable here in Missouri. I don't know what the heat index has been, but I check my outdoor thermometer under the eave of my house and it's been between 96 and 108 the past couple of weeks. Also, no rain. Grass is turning yellow and white in spots.

we've had mid-high 90's with incredible humidity - the "feels like" index is at like 106, most days. But at least it usually rains in the afternoon to cool off the roofs. The other thing is for us, down here the heat doesn't go away. Not sure about Ontario, but my friend in New York pointed out that while it does get incredibly hot there at times, eventually within a week or less then finally some cooler days come. With us there's no break til mid October. It's "stay inside and mess with yer stereo" season.

Yeah. 2-3 weeks straight of 30°C+ temps is an unusually long period of extreme hot weather for us. I know in certain parts of Florida has been getting a lot of rain recently. We were reaching to almost 40°C + humidex on a few. High humidity is the norm around here but not the 90°F+ temps although it might feel like that a lot of the time.

Temps on at least three days in the Caledon area, got up to 38-39C....with Humidity on top of that, the weather guys were talking 49C. Don't know what that is in fahrenheit.

It was 10C my last day in Newfoundland. I wore all the warm clothes I brought with me and still shivered. What a shock coming back to Ontario.
Canada is like reverse baked Alaska. Hot in the middle, frozen on the outside.

hmmm...buying a pair of M50 would affect the weather?
Playing it louder would warm up the living hall or not? :p

Yes, playing speakers will heat up a space. There is first the electrical energy lost in the voice coil to heat, and any sound that doesn't escape the house will bounce around on the walls and furniture vibrating them, and causing the mechanical energy to also turn to heat.

Yeah, Michael; typical speakers are a bit less than 1% efficient at turning electrical energy into acoustical energy. For example, at the usual 1 meter measuring distance an acoustic watt would be at about at a 112dB level. If instead the speaker put out only 102dB(a tenth of an acoustic watt)for 1 watt of electrical power input, that would represent an efficiency of about 10%; if 92dB, about 1%. The rest is primarily lost as heat, as Chris pointed out.
So, on some of those scorchers in Kuala Lumpur you can turn down the volume(or turn up the air conditioning). Incidentally, I was just listening to an excellent Rimsky-Korsakov collection by your home-town band, the Malaysian Philharmonic. Do you have any of their recordings?

Dey is in da house!!!!!!!!! and happily playing The Who's Tommy, disc one. hehehehehee.....for the moment, I am totally grinning at the detail I'm catching. Strings (as in acoustic guitar) sound great as well as Roger's vocals and even though I have to have them kind of close together, the imaging is great. Will have more to add later, but for now I'm in LURV!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many thanks, too, to the person I spoke to at Axiom earlier, who helped me out with my shipping info. Dare I crank them up???????? I'm not worthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No train crashing! individual instruments remain individual. yay!!!!! ting! bell! Don't mind me, I'm a fool......

John Entwistle: a GOD!!!!!!! lol!!!!!! maybe it's just because I can suddenly HEAR the differentiation in the instruments. And being that these speakers MAKE bass, without a need for sub, the bass guitar doesn't feel disembodied, or vague. I have NEVER heard this recording like this. I feel like the Silver Surfer of music....whooosh....... And I'm perfectly sober!

thanks! got to wait til Thurs. for that. These speakers are so good, they make me want to be a better person! For Jerry Garcia's birthday am giving "Candy Man" a whirl and then it's off to dreamland. Sounds so beautiful. It lets me get "into" the music, rather than worrying about it. Before I'd been worried that I would have to be too near them, due to small room - but not so, this sounds just fine. The lack of mud is just remarkable.

Very good, Em; enjoy. I heard, however, that the M50s sound especially good when playing Rachmaninoff.

Congrats on your new sound system. I'm going to have to get some M50's. I still think I have a hole in my mid bass guatar range with M22 set to small and EP350 crossed over at 80hz. I think changing my L/R from 2 sets of M22 to 1 set of M22 + M50 would make a big difference. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Thanks! I can't tell you how wonderful it is not dealing with a sub. (which is my shortcoming, I realize, as the majority of the world evidently doesn't have the subwoofer stress)
Can't wait to get home from work and have another listen.
re: sub stress - all that said, I never tried an Axiom sub, so maybe given an Axiom sub, it would have been a different sort of experience. What I love with the all in one speakers is how seamlessly they roll from mid to low, high to low, etc. That's a big part of the attraction, I think. Seamlessness. And depth. sheesh, it's nearly holographic

Em, your joy over your new M50's is almost enough to make me want to try them out myself as the M50's are one of the few Axiom's I have not had a chance to hear yet.

For some reason I still prefer the mid-bass sound you get from a good two-way speaker over any three-way I have heard so far. The M40s do a wonderful job in that regard, but I do sometimes wish they could play lounder while remaining clean. The M50s apparently have a smoother response curve *and* play louder while keeping all the things I like about my M40s. No wonder you're enjoying them

I'm likin' 'em kinda close to the wall tho. But that's just me! am so pleased.... LOL, I guess I could go ahead and get rid of the boxes.
