Has anyone here had experience with online mortgage lenders such as Quicken, etc.?

I've used the online forms for a broker and a lender, but not an online only company. For that matter, not sure how the ones I did are going to turn out...

That said, my preference is to deal with a company that has a physical presence, just so you can verbally discuss what's going on with one person. It's a piece of mind thing.

Then they immediately sell it to one of the on-line companies.

I’m with Ken on the peace of mind using a local bank or credit union.

I did my mortgage through USAA which handles everything online and absolutely hated it. I was always wondering if the paperwork I’d faxed them really got to the right person or if they received all of it. Unrelated to being online they got behind in processing my mortgage which having to deal with remotely was a real pain in the butt.

If I ever get another mortgage I will only go with a local credit union and never online again, though I have no issues going online for simpler services like an auto loan. However, for something requiring as much communication and exchange of documents as a home mortgage I will only deal with a local broker if I do it again.

We re-fi'd with E-Loan a few years back and saved a bundle on interest and closing costs. Communication was both electronic and verbal, and never an issue. And as was said earlier, they sold it within a month - to Wells Fargo which has several branches in our area, including a mortgage-specific office (which, ironically, doesn't take payments at the office - go figure).

I'd go through them again.

I've refi'd twice now (2004, 2011) via Lending Tree, online. The competing offers came in fast and were for lower rates than my local banks. Plus, I was able to get cash out, which local banks were not willing to do.

There was a lot of phone, email, and fax work, but not any more than I would have had locally, I suspect. I handled it all from work (between the message boards and the refi, I hardly see patients any more wink ), so I would have been on the phone/email/fax to a local guy just as much, I think. The lender I seleected had a loan processing person who was my primary point of contact. He was very proactive and responsive - a real go-getter, in a good way. No complaints.
