I was at Target the other day and noticed this Vizio 47 inch LCD TV, model E470VA. It was sandwiched between 2 Samsung TV's. My last 2 TV's have been Samsung, but I'm not satisfied with the off angle viewing quality. Walking back and forth and checking out the off angle quality of these 3 TV's, I noticed that the Samsung's still had the poor quality, but I didn't notice any degradation in the Vizio. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone else have or had a Vizio Tv, and if so, what do you thing of it?

Hi Cat,

I used to dismiss off-brand TVs as having really degraded picture quality (and in past years they did), but recently I've been impressed by several Vizio displays. I took an old friend out shopping (still a CRT owner) to his local Costco and we compared several Vizios to nearby Samsungs. The off-axis viewing angle on the Vizio was very good; I also told Fred (my old friend) to consider plasma sets (including Samsung and Panasonic plasma) because there's no loss of contrast or color degradation with off-axis viewing. I can't be sure if the Vizio I looked at was an LCD (I think so) or a plasma, but off-axis it was very good. Of course, if you don't view off-axis, then it doesn't matter, although the washed out contrast and color changes with off-angle viewing of LCDs has always bugged me.

Sadly, he didn't buy a new set. He bought an emergency generator for his island summer home. . .Oh well.

Regards,
Alan

With the Samsung, I don't have to be very far off axis to see the degradation. It's only perfect looking when I view from dead-on straight ahead. Sit down and I notice a little bit off, move one seat over and I notice it even more. I've been wanting to upgrade my 37 inch to a 47 inch, so maybe this is the one, but I have too many irons in the pot to justify it today. Maybe next year. Anything over 47 inches, I have to take the speakers off the wall, and that would be bad.

Unfortunately, as good as they are and they have received some pretty good reviews, Vizio only make LCDs NOT plasma.

I bought 3 Vizio 32" sets (their best line) that I like very much, and when I buy a 55" for my HT, Vizio is the first company I'll look at.

FWIW, I also bought a 32" Insignia that I liked very much also.

What?! No High-Def?!?

Then he doesn't need a generator, as there is no need for him to even have electricity.

True, no hi-def. It's odd what priorities we all have. He'll drop $900 for some exotic wide-angle lens for his camera or high-end binoculars yet he resists getting a new TV, let alone high-def. I can't convince him otherwise.

The generator is for keeping the refrigerator freezer running when there are power outages. With underwater power cables supplying the islands, this is not infrequent and it can be 24 hours or more before power is restored.

24 hours? Pfffft.
Although it's getting better or the winters are getting milder, a good blizzard can knock us out for days at a time. My road is not exactly a priority with the Electric Company.

Maybe this is why?

See, Alan? He doesn't need a freezer now, does he? I'll bet that snapshot was taken yesterday.
