Was thinking of using this receiver with my M22's, QS4's and VP150. Anyone have experience with Marantz? It is rated at 50 watts but have read they are conservative with their ratings.

Thanks

Marantz are very good and you really can't go wrong with the purchase. The only item of caution would be that this particular AVR is designed for dealing with space issues for use in a relatively small room. Even if it drove all the channels equally at the same output(50 watts)since the speakers you have are capable of handling much higher power output, you have to be careful of clipping and possible damage to your speakers if you attempt to turn the AVR up too loud.

Of course, this AVR would probably not have enough power and headroom to deal with the volume requirements of a larger space in which case a model with the capability of 100 watts/ch and up would better serve your requirements.

Should be fine, but - like casey said - if it sounds bad, turn it down.

Doug, welcome. The NR1602 is a typically fine modern HT receiver and has the advantage of Audyssey MultEQ. As to the power rating, at a typical home listening distance(more significant than room size)of about 10', 50 watts would be sufficient for a sound level on peaks with M22s of about 102dB(one speaker; both mains at the same level would be 105dB). This should be adequate. 100 watts would of course increase those maximum sound levels by 3dB.

If you don't have the 1602 now and are thinking of buying it, what are the points that attract you? It may be possible to suggest even more cost-effective possibilities that would fit your needs.

I had it narrowed down to the Denon AVR-1912, Yamaha RX-V671 and the Marantz. Looking for internet connectivity, Airplay would be nice but not required. Currently have a Denon AVR-3805, which lacks HDMI inputs, which is the main reason for looking. Distance from speaker to ear is 12'.

Thanks for the info.

last tuesday i got a new Marantz SR5005; and i'm using it as a pre-pro.

first thing i did was to open the casing to see the insides which seem of very good quality.
calibration (with Odyssey) went smoothly (i did it 5 times, just for fun) and then i made a few fine tuning adjustments listening to music/TV/movies.

the processing is of excellent quality, so much better than the old (1985) Yamaha processor i had before, and the sound is also improved, mainly in the surround channels.

JC said to me what i should expect as a difference between the old processor and the new one: "Hi, Don't worry . . . the improvement will be nothing less than shocking ! ! !";
i was not shocked, but very impressed by the quality of the sound, which is silky smooth, and also by the decoders included in the receiver.
a good part of this quality of sound is due to the front speakers, M80 v.3

so far, i'm 100% satisfied with the Marantz.

Doug, the NR1602 is a fine unit, but is a bit pricey. Of the possibilities you mention, the 1912 would seem to be the best buy, especially if you get a factory refurbished unit, which should be at least as reliable as a brand-new one. For about $390 it's available here .

An even better choice might be to move up to the 2112 with the higher grade Audyssey XT for about $40 more.
