Posts: 1 getting ready to get some new speakers and am interested in the M80 towers. However a new receiver or amp is not in the cards (probably not anyway) and I'm wondering if the Pioneer Elites are powerful enough to drive this speaker. Pioneer doesn't rate them for 4 ohms, but I've read of owners using them to do so w no problem. Anyone have any experience with Pioneer and the Axioms? My unit is a VSX 94TXH, 140w per channel to the fronts at 8 ohms, 180 at 6ohms.

AFAIK, the Pioneer Elites work fine with the M80s, especially if you're not going to crank them like crazy. For comparison info, I run my M80s off an (old) Harman Kardon AVR 525 at 75wpc, and I usually listen to music at between 60-70 dB. I'd guess movies are peaking around 90dB. YMMV.

A Pio Elite is much more powerful than that, so you should be just fine.

FT, welcome. The fact that your 94TXH(along with most other receivers)doesn't have an "official" 4 ohm rating is of little significance. Under FTC amplifier power regulations, a unit would have to be driven at the full rated power for at least 5 continuous minutes into a 4 ohm load to support such a rating. This isn't a real-world home listening scenario that would ever occur.

The M80s are slightly above average in sensitivity and average about 6 ohms in impedance over the full frequency range. Your 94TXH can easily drive them to beyond safe listening levels.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

How large is your room, how far away do you sit from the speakers? What are your listening habits (Do you like to listen at loud volumes?). What other speakers will the pioneer be driving?

I don't think pioneer is typically one of the recommended brands by axiom but I wouldn't automatically assume that it won't work. Worst case you could try it out and send back the m80's within the 30 day window (for return shipping fees) if you have problems. The m80's are amazing speakers and I would get them if you can. I'm willing to bet you will have zero problems.

I've not heard anyone having problems with M80's and Pioneer Elites. I have the smallest one from 2009, which is driving 2 M22's on Left, 2 M22's on Right, and 1 VP150 and 1 M2 on Center at high to very high listening levels without any problems. (Sometimes I exercise in a different room and crank them so I can hear them better).

Should be no problem as was already said. In my experience with my Pio Elite (SC-05) the stated specs were actually somewhat conservative compared to independent measurements.

I have a Pioneer VSX-1120 that has been driving my M80s for months, often at very loud volume. No problems here and it is not even an "Elite" model.

I second. I'm using the same Pioneer model as a pre-pro; I tried it on its own and it is surprisingly capable at powering the M80 and VP180.

My Pio Elite VSX-84TXSi drives my M80's, VP150, QS8's and an Epic sub with no problem. Your 94 should work just fine.
