Historical fact.
It used to be here, until someone recently discovered the law had never been changed, that a husband could check their wives into such an institution just by bringing her in and signing a form. No doctor's diagnosis, no questions asked.

Apparently it was done quiet commonly. I guess they were too religious to get a divorce but had no qualms about locking their wives away for no particular reason.

Everyone knows women get hysterical sometimes. And the only known cure for that? Vibrators (link is historical and safe for work). Well, at least by 19th Century standards.

Have you noticed that thread derailment follows a fairly consistent pattern ? It's not so much a sharp turn as a gradually increasing oscillation...
