Hello to all .... I recently purchased an Avia dvd and a Radio Shack analog sound meter .... I reviewed the dvd and the different sound test tones generated but being new to all this I still have many questions regarding the adjustment process. I have reviewed some of the threads on this site .... they have been helpful but I guess I am looking for some very basic information (good resource) on how to perform the entire process step by step .... Any suggestions ? Thank you, Paul (Yamaha 1400, M60's, YP150, QS8's - waiting on SVS sub) ....

Paul, I'd suggest that you not use the meter or disc for the actual setup. Use the YPAO feature on your 1400. Until you get your sub, be sure to set the M60s as "large" so that they will handle the low bass and set the crossover to them at 80Hz, skipping YPAO on these two points. Otherwise, allow it to set the speaker levels, delays for speaker distances, and equalization. After you get the SVS, change the M60s to "small" so that the sub handles most of the bass below 80Hz.

JohnK is correct. Your receiver will do it for you automatically and save you the trouble. My 2400 does a great job of calibrating the speaker levels and distances. I've double checked it with a SPL meter and it is spot on. However, I do find the SPL meter to be an indispensable item for my separate two channel system.

You'll still need the RS meter if you ever get a DVD-A or SACD player. Those require 6-channel analog inputs to the RX-V1400, and none of the receiver's digital stuff (YPAO, bass management, etc) work for those. The RS meter can also help you find bass peaks and troughs and fine tune subwoofer positioning.
