Hey gang, its been a while since i have posted but i have run into a dilemma. You can see my current setup in my signature and I would like to upgrade something. I say something as it is not going to be everything for then i will need money for a divorce attorney and that gets really expensive. Recently we built our first home and now have greatly increased our living room volume, i say volume as we now have 10 foot ceilings. i have more than enough power/db's but debating between a new SVS sub or M80's or the new center channel. mostly watch movies/tv and music is occasional but most of my music happens on my portable devices to and fro. Any advice since i cant drop 5k and do it all over?

Get the VP160 or 180 now and then add the M80s for the next upgrade later this year or next year, your sub is plenty strong enough and the difference in surrounds is not worth the upgrade when you can gain so much more from the front. There is so much info in the center channel that a full range speaker really adds to the HT experience, IMO.

Jason,

While i dont want to admit it, you are right. a new sub is to satisfy my not so teenage vanity to make it like a 1999 Spring Break Cancun dance club (i was there) but in reality going from a VP100 to a VP160 in a center channel is a HUGE upgrade for under 600 bucks. Only downside is i have to raise my TV another 4.5 inches but at least its on a floating pole mount.

I would also say upgrade the center.. That has been the single largest improvement i have made. i went from a vp150-vp180 saying it was a night and day difference would be an understatement........

I would say get a vp160/180 and a pair of 10" subs.. I have a JBL 8" that is ok... you could probably get a pair for a couple hundred bucks.? then when you buy a "big sub" you will 1 big sub and 2 small ones.... I am running a EP600+ my JBL 8" in the family room....

If i was you, i would get the center channel at a pair of these.

if you have amazon prime, they are free shipping... I think the combination of a larger center plus a pair of subs for 700-900ish$ will be the largest "bang" for your buck... then you could always get the SVS PB13-ultra or a EP600/800 later and be WAY good to go!@

Also, with the pair of subs, you may decide that your m22's+ subs are just fine... which would actually save you some cash in the long run smile

Brian, I'd agree that the biggest improvement over what you have now would result from getting the VP160. If you want to spend what you mentioned you could also add a second PB12-NSD, which properly positioned(e.g., midpoints of opposite side walls, front and back walls or diagonally opposite corners)would give you both stronger and smoother bass. I'd think that there would be relatively little reason with those subs to go with M80s; the M22s should continue to be fine.

You could upgrade to M80's, use one of your M22's as a centre until you can get a VP160/180(then use M22's as rears). Just throwing an alternative out there.

Good ideas, especially from Jason and Adrian.

I think the VP160 is going to make your M22's look...inadequate.

Adrian, i have read about others using M22 as a center. This may be the best solution for me.

@Dakkon, I do have a "big" sub with the PB12NSD but want BIGGER for the same reason someone buys a corvette and never goes above 70 MPH.

While the SVS sub does way more than it should for only costing me 600 bucks at the time, i feel i have a week spot in the say 60-80 hz level while using M22's as fronts. This would be the reason for going to M80's. I would probably set a crossover at 60 hz and let the SVS just pound away at 18-60 hz range which it does oh so well.

I appreciate all the feedback and when it comes down to it i feel a VP160 and M80's will be the future for me, now its time to tell the wife. Wish me luck
