if it's any consolation, i'm running M80's on a Denon 1602 (70wpc into 8ohm, 110 into 6, no rating for 4ohm)

haven't had any problems with the speakers set to Small or Large

Brent @ Axiom told me not to use them with a 1400 because it will not do 4 ohms. The lowest it will go is 6 ohms per Yamaha specs. He said hooking them up to the v1400 would cause overheating of the receiver as well as shutdowns of the receiver. This of course will cause long term damage to the receiver as well as my pocketbook. I either have to go with M60ti's or buy another receiver. I'm getting the M60ti's. I've read plenty of great reviews for them as well, and the savings isn't bad either.

I'm not sure that's good advice on the 1400-- I'm guessing that's based purely on reputation of previous Yamahas.

The 1400 manual makes a big deal about being better (and specifically, better at low-ohm, high-current loads) than other, more entry-level Yamaha receivers.

I just don't see in the Yamaha documentation or owner's manual that it is 4 ohm capable. The choices I see are 6 or 8 ohms.

I sent Yamaha a tech email about this very question and will post when I get their reply.

Pinning down this sort of information from the manufacturer is sometimes tricky, as if they give a definite 'yes' they fall under 4-ohm UL regulations, which can decrease total power output on an amp. I don't know if email correspondence could be used against them in this or not.

It's my understanding that even many fully-capable Denon models don't "say" that they're capable of 4-ohms, but just give lots of hints in the manual. As, I believe, Yamaha is doing-- but I'm only driving m22s with my 1400, so unfortunately I can't test this.

I especially think this wouldn't be a problem as m80s are more of a '5.5ohm load'.

I think 'the proof will be in the pudding'-- anyone have experience with this?

All excellent points. I highly doubt I'll ever hear anything from Yamaha anyway.

Anyone out there using this setup?! (RX-V1400 + M80ti's)

Direct from Yamaha...

In regards to your question on running other that 8ohms speakers on
your Yamaha receiver. All Yamaha receivers support 4ohms and 6ohms
speakers. The recommended setting on the Yamaha receiver should be at
8ohms. Please keep in mind that if you run 4ohms or 6ohms speakers on
your `A` channel you cannot run any speakers on your `B` channel. If
you have any more questions please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely
Ken
