I'm getting ready to replace the older Toshiba plasma in the kids room, I would like to go with an LCD-Led around 46 inches.

It seems like the prices have dropped a lot on the 3D sets so my thoughts are going that way. That being said I've never seen one in person, I've read a lot about active and passive 3D, but I would like to hear from real users on what they think and get some thoughts on what brands to look at.

Eventually I'll get my lazy rear down the mountain to a big box store to take a look, but any help would be appreciated now.

I haven't yet, but plan on soon.

Here's what I've learned of Passive vs. Active displays.

Passive: Uses cheaper glasses. Cuts your resolution in half. Uses half the resolution for the left eye and the other half for the right eye. This would be better when tv's go to 4k resolution, instead of 1080.

Active: Glasses cost more and have to be recharged. You don't lose resolution. The TV communicates to the glasses to synchronize the blackening out of the lenses in an alternate fashion. The tv very rapidly displays what is meant for only the left eye, while the glasses right eye is blackened out. Then reverses the process for the other eye. Happens so fast, you don't notice anything odd about it.

I'd like to compare the different displays somewhere, but every time I go to a local BB store, the glasses are either missing or torn up.

One more difference is that passive doesn't introduce the effects that make some people uncomfortable / nauseous.

I bought an LG (passive) that I like very much, though I've only tried the 3D with one movie just to see what it was like. I didn't feel like the resolution was halved, though technically it is.

Thanks guys, Mark I've read a couple articles that have stated passive is almost as good as active but that could also depend on the display, from what I understand LG is one of the better models for passive. I'm going to try and see both before I make a purchase, there are still a few deals out there that include active glasses with the set.

Mine included 4 pairs, I think, and Best Buy had something going at the time to get another 4 pair.

Too bad my room couldn't hold 8 people. I'd throw a freakin' 3D party! smile

For those whose present monitors are working well and wouldn't bother buying a new set if they didn't want 3D, it probably would be worth checking out these two websites for very good alternatives to securing 3D and they "do work".

I don't have the direct links but they are as follows:

HDFury.com/3D Fury and CurtPalme.com/3D Theater

The 3D Fury was just introduced on the market and it is a little less in cost and somewhat more versatile and advanced than the 3D Theater(been out for about a year) especially relating to the glasses which are shipping at the end of the month and in terms of adjustment capabilities, by far, the best I have seen.

Very interesting, I would love to see a demonstration of this device.

Active reduces the brightness quite a bit since only one eye is seeing an image at any given microsecond. On a TV it won't be as noticeable as something like a projector.

Thanks Nick, originally I wanted active, but after weighing the cost of the glasses and how fast my kids and dogs will probably destroy them I'm leaning towards passive. I'm guessing also since I wear glasses when I watch TV, the passive may be more comfortable.
