What movie would you watch first on your HT, if you were going back to that time again and why?

Just wondering, as there some who watch a lot more movies than myself.

Why do we have to go back in time? Most movies are available on dvd or blu-ray. I guess you mean to see them in a theater at a first time viewing. I'd like to see The Wizard of OZ in a theater for the first time, although, I'd probably be disappointed that it wasn't up to par with the system I have at home. So I'm back to preferring watching it on blu-ray anyway.

I mean, after experiencing your system and knowing what it is capable of, what would be the most enjoyable movie to watch on your HT...

Bad phrasing of the orignal question...

Tough call.

With guests, "Fellowhip of the Ring". There is just so much beautiful scenery for enjoying HD video combined with outstanding audio. I never tire of any in that series.

If I'm feeling purely nostalgic, the 'original' Star Wars, Episode IV. I still feel like a giddy little kid every time that first Star Destroyer flies by.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. The best John William's score, the best action Spielberg ever shot, and the best sound effects Ben Burtt ever recorded. Indy's pistol--a Winchester rifle. Those punches--wet leather jackets struck with a bat. Can't wait for the Blu-ray release this fall.

I have a whole slew of movies that I've been "saving up" since I started finishing my basement 9 months ago. I picked some that were supposed to be good, and others that were questionable, but I wanted to see with a new projector and hear with the upgraded speakers.

My daughter (who tunes 18 today) says that Super 8 should be our first movie in the new theater. Her boyfriend says that we should watch the latest Fast and Furious movie. My wife chimed in with a (don't pick on me) favorite of mine, Gone in 60 Seconds (love the cars). I think that the first thing in will actually be a demo disc that I've been a (very) minor player in its development over at AVS.

Avatar would be good, although I still find it a bit too cartoonish still. LOTR will be viewed in blu-ray glory, but none of my family are interested in it. Same with Star Wars. Raiders would be good also. But Love, Actually? Um, no...

When the VP160 arrives, I'm going to be "all about dialog" for a week I'm sure! Well, I was joking....

Though I really WILL be looking forward to concert Discs!

Mark, lots of dialog in Sophie's Choice, Leaving Las Vegas, or I Want to Live. (Hide the razor blades!)

Seriously, Hurt Locker has dialog and big effects happening simultaneoulsy. 'least I think it does, but what would I know, me with my VP150 and all.

Before my budget tripled on my home theatre, I was going to go with a basic Harmon K system. As I started auditioning bigger systems I saw/heard/felt Master and Commander on a Paradigm Studio 100 based set-up at my local dealer and knew I had to get THAT kind of feeling from my setup. M & C is still my favourite movie for boom boom and surround effects.

Two movies that I watch a couple times per year - normally by myself as my wife & daughter aren't too impressed with these two:

Midnight Run: De Niro & Charles Grodin. A great cross-country chase move from 1988. Lots of humour & language but not a lot of audio effects; however, it is a good story & Grodin is wonderful.

Last Man Standing: Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken & Bruce Dern. A largely unknown movie. I'm normally not a big Willis fan but I liked him in this one. Located in a dying town (The Great Depression) in the Texas desert with lots of stylized 1930s gangster shootouts with some great audio effects. Ry Cooder's haunting guitar work throughout adds to the ambiance. Overall a great action flic...

Lots of good movies mentioned already. Lord of the Rings any of the three, Master and commander for the opening battle scene (foot falls acrosss the seiling are so cool), Casino Royal has a really cool scene where you transition from the casino to the street in front and the surround effects are so well done, Iron Man had some really good lfe.

And that scene where you see R2-D2 attached to the bottom of the mothership. Priceless.

Pan's Labyrinth always stands out to me as an excellent surround mix. It's been a while now, I don't recall it as sub workout, but makes you look over your shoulder all the time. Great use of the back channels. Discrete DTS-HD 7.1 mix.

My son (7) will say :"Cars!!"
My wife will say :"The English Patient"
My daughther (10) will say:"Any Korean drama."
I would say:"let's try AVS Demo for all sorts of varieties, but actually, for sound, I would go for Transformer 3, for visual and sound, Baraka."

I've been building my basement HT for almost 2 years now and I honestly haven't spent any time deciding what will be the very first movie I play. I'm torn between watching something I know will be great vs something I haven't watched (at home) yet.

I'm pretty partial to The Matrix series. War of the Worlds has some amazing LFE. Star Wars 4-6 are awesome thou 1-3 have better effects. I've been holding off watching these at home until the basement HT is completed:

Iron Man 2
Thor
Harry Potter 7 & 8 (haven't seen these at all yet)
Avatar
Transformers 3

It's probably going to be a long time until I watch something like Invictus (non action) again.

Love that movie just for the sound. I wonder which sounds better the tripod coming up from the ground or the ipod that comes up in scary movie 4 smile

This review is spot on about the audio in Inception(Blu-ray). To top it off it is an excellent movie.

Having seen Inception in the theater I had high hopes for its soundtrack in the home environment and I wasn’t disappointed. This lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio soundtrack is demonstration quality and is going to please those who like to play their systems loud. This recording has wide dynamic range and boasts superlative clarity and high level detail that is truly impressive. Dialogue is definitive and appreciably lucid through the center channel as it reaches far into the room. It’s located just slightly in front of the left/right speakers within the acoustic space it occupies within the soundstage. Front channel separation and imaging is excellent. This draws out both large and small sound elements and allows their directional correlation based upon the onscreen events to be readily definable. The mix makes effective and aggressive use of the surround channels to extend the front soundstage and reproduce the spatial and discrete sounds of this engaging soundtrack. The listening position is submerged into a 360 degree web of sound that can be riveting as it bombards the senses with a combination of well placed sound effects and music. This is a dynamically charged sound mix that frequently utilizes the subwoofer to provide viscerally potent impact. The audio’s low frequency effects are applied authoritatively to underscore the bombastic and aggressive aspects of the presentation and it does so quite effectively. Its palpable presence is never in question as it fills the room with refined bass quality that is appreciably superior and on occasion skin tingling. This is a sophisticated sound design that is loaded with various sound effects, spatial cues, music, and dialogue. Each is clearly represented with enriching clarity, detail and appropriate sound field placement. I couldn’t see it sounding any better.

This is a reference quality audio/video presentation that truly enhances the enjoyment of this film. Those who like playing their systems at reference levels will want to exercise caution as there are transient peaks and extended dynamic range in this recording capable of testing the limits of lesser systems. Kudos to Warner Home Video on this one.

I can not even fathom listening to Anything at reference level, on my system reference level is 31.... My normal listening level is 12.. movies, maybe 17, but at that level it gets Crazy loud quick.. I have the max set to 20....

One of the first things I watched on my new Axiom HT was "Hanna". Tremendous visuals and great sound effects.

Then I pulled out my DVD of Peter Gabriel's "Secret World" concert. It literally took my breath away.

In fact, most of my first round of viewing has been musical. "Hair" was a standout. The opening scene after the bus pulls away and the drum fill pans across the room as "Aquarius" launches. Man, it sounded fine!

The dynamics in Inception are superb. My receiver would not be able to handle the dynamic peaks at reference level.

I love the Muppets. I always have and I always will.

When I really feel like bawling my eyes out, I watch the episode where the Muppets learn that Jim Henson has died. After they sing the song about believing in each other then I start to feel better.

pay 100 bucks for?

One of my favorite films from the late sixties, early seventies is Ken Russell's, "The Devils." It's based on Aldous Huxley's "The Devils of Loudoun" (sp?). I haven't seen it in 41 years and it left that big an impression (welt) on me, so I've been hot to see it again for years.

Around that time, many writers artists and directors were fascinated by what was being termed "ultraviolence." Peckinpaw went there, Kubrick went there, Warhol went there. Python even did a skit, "Ken Russell's Garden Party," which begins as a most genteel and posh Sunday gathering on the pristine lawns, and devloves into a savage bloodbath. I like when that happens.

"The Devils" (1971) stars Vanessa Redgrave (as a nun) and Oliver Reed as Richelieu. Purported to be based on at least some truth, it is an "investigation" into the collision of 1630's French Catholicism with sex and violence. The performances are as stunning as the subject matter and its sometimes gruesome depiction.

It was re-released last month. It has been restored and is uncut, as the original version would have been slapped with an X (boy, that happened very early into the new rating system).

So here's the rub. It's NOT BluRay, and with this effort, it's not likely to be on anyone's "to do" list for a while.

It's $100 for a DVD, from the UK!

I was gonna ask GOD, but we're still not speaking after that little lutefisk incident, so I'll settle for your opinions.

Geez, I wrote all that for nuthin!' (Not really. I was getting kinda excited while I was compsoing it.) Every retailer I asked said they weren't ordering it becasue of the cost.

Thanks tons, Sean!

I looked last week all over the web and $99 was the best I could find. Guess someone already shelled out the $100 and was not happy...... or touched themselves to death.

Re: The Devils (Special Edition), i see Amazon u.k. sells it for 11.99 pounds.
i saw this movie on tv a long time ago and like it a lot.
i had been searching for the title for a few years now, having forgotten it.
too bad it's zone 2 only (for now)...

i might buy it from Amazon u.k., don't know yet.
what i can say is that Amazon's delivery from either France or the U.K. is very fast. last week a delivery from the u.k. took only 4 days.

Hey, anything else will require my 10% finder's fee.

Your welcome, Bob! Glad I could help you find it.

Darn you. Now he is going to make me watch it. My favorite tv shows were the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. I don't know if I can handle it.

I'm all set, I put a rush on it, but the UK compatability is an interesting question. Actually, I think this disc is coming only from the UK, whether direct or to dealers. We'll see.

Okay, I'm a movie buff and I know, Transformers, Inception, Gone in 60 seconds (I'm with you on the cars, but I like the movie too), Casino Royale, and Avatar are ones I will watch every now and then (on Blu-Ray of course) for visual and audio reasons.

But there are 4 movies that I love cranking up on my HT:

Bad Boys 1 on BluRay
Bad Boys 2 (DVD) - can't wait for it to hit the bluray shelves... that car chase (on the bridge) is INSAAAANE for sound on dvd.. can only imagine what it'll be like on BluRay!

And of course the Iron-Man movies... when he's flying you hear it go around the room and I can FEEL him going around the room - the 800 is just a bone-rattler..!

Remember the first time I watched a horror/thriller... I actually thought someone was running at me from just behind my right ear because that's where the sound came from; jumped right out of my seat lol
