RED teases 4K REDray player and projector for the theater / millionaire set (Engadget)

I'd definitely be interested in the projector.... The second generation, that is, if they can get it even cheaper. I think $5,000 is the max I'd spend on a display, but I'm certainly interested in the technology, and I'm surprised it's not more expensive in this first iteration. So my fingers are crossed for the second generation, but I want a new display before then. I wonder what I'll end up with in the meantime.

I've already started planning to buy this projector, so I'm saving up for it. It may come that a cheaper version is released before my projector fund hits $10k, but I will own a Red projector...I will...

Well, if you really want red, I've got a nice can of paint I can sell you for a lot less than $10K.

What exactly are you going to do with a projector of that high a resolution without any program material?

There will be program material, eventually; upscaling for now. But the reason to get this projector is because of the frickin' lasers.

Charles and I both have been seeking a laser projector. The other amazing abilities: passive 3D, 48 (or 60) fps per eye, 4k resolution; are just added bonuses in my opinion.

Yeah, the picture quality with the laser illumination is what the main draw is for me. Upscaling is fine for me for now.

I just read that Sony intends to have a laser projector out this fall. With Red's history, it's hard telling when their projector will actually be available for purchase. Maybe with Sony stepping up, Red will move a bit faster.

Judging from the past Sony's will cost more, with less quality/features, but will likely be released first. Regardless of what Sony offers up, I'll still get the Red.

Really, you're that brand loyal? What if the Sony performs better, but costs less? I'm not even remotely thinking that will happen, but....

I'm that disloyal to Sony. Other than the Playstation (because no one else makes a compatible product), I will never own any other electronics manufactured by Sony.

Agreed. It hurt me to buy a PS3 but what can I say. It was the right choice for me so I overcame my personal bias.

I must have missed the memo. I did not realize Sony had such a negative fan base. Did you know that they have a 90 day projector swap out program? If your new projector goes on the fritz within 90 days of receipt, you call them up, they send you a new projector and you send yours back to them. No shipping charges or anything. I'm not a Sony fan, and the vpl es95 I have now is only the second Sony product I can remember buying, but I have to say that I've been impressed as hell with the projector and their installation support. But I certainly understand the disgruntled attitudes towards a manufacture. I feel the same way about Marantz, and will not consider Marantz for any future purchases.

So that means the projector will fail at 91 days. I've never had any trouble with a Sony product while in warranty. It's what happens shortly after that keeps me from buying anything else from them.

I'm sure my 60 gig PS3 would be dead by now, if I had not removed the warranty voiding sticker, and cleaned the dust out (no way to do that without removing the sticker), and replaced there messy application of white thermal paste with a nice thin layer of Arctic Silver.

I thought I was just being unfair and that I just must have had bad luck. It was my bad experiences that actually turned me into a researchaholic when I buy stuff now.

When I last considered a Sony product a number of years ago, it became very quickly apparent that when you compare features per dollar with any compatible product line, Sony always has the least amount of specs or features in the price range.

That backed up my grumpiness to some degree of justification. Then I listened to a CBC radio special that was discussing the trend beginning in the mid to late 70s of companies starting to rely more and more on marketing instead of product quality. Sony was very frequently used as an example of a company that poured tons of money into R&D and as a result became know as true innovators in the electronics industry. However, through interviews with former staff and management, it then described how over time people saw huge portions of their R&D departments shut down and funds were diverted to inversely growing marketing departments. Quality was purposefully cheapened but prices remained the same based on the company's "brand."

Finally the last straw for me back in 2005 was the Sony trojan that they snuck into their music label CDs. Play the CD on your computer and it secretly installed a program there as a rootkit. This prevented you from playing it or other similarly coded Sony CDs so you couldn't copy them. It was the early days of copy protection but no one should be able to install something on my PC that I don't authorize. Also, copy protection, OK if you feel you must, but now I can't listen to it either?

Sadly, in the end, I suck at holding grudges as I did buy a PS3.

Rant over, as I just defeated myself with that last sentence.

I bought my PS3 second hand. That way Sony did not profit from my purchase. That's what I tell myself anyway...

I bought my PS3 when it was first released. Sony actually lost money on my sale.

My uncle ALWAYS raves about his Sony Bravia LCD flat screen... I just don't have the heart to tell him for the same amount that he paid for his SONY LCD, he could have gotten a Pioneer Kuro which would be WAY better in my opinion... He believes the crap that the sales people tell him....

The integrated BluRay was a big part of the decision. It was the 'other' thing I was looking to buy at the time and I got both for the combined price and only had to talk my wife into one purchase instead of two. It also played SACDs back then, which was something else I had an urge to experiment with.

The premature Xbox deaths were also at their worst around that time but it was the BR and SACD that really moved it to the PS3 for me. For gaming, I had no preference back then, as long as it played Rock Band.

Murph. It sounds like you and I went through the same decision process. I needed wanted a bluray player. I was curious about SACD. My son wanted 3 games that were on the PS3 and not the Wii. I held my nose and bought the best player.

At that time, Sony was about the only one offering substantive software updates to keep the PS3 current as well.

Say, maybe we should start a PS3 thread where the boys can talk about this here red ray player.

Naively, I once thought that my work and interests would basically ensure that technology didn't "pass me by" in my lifetime.

I'm over that now. I not only can't keep up, I'm not sure if I want to.

I've still the same comments to make, uhhh, just in case anyone was interested.

But, a 4k projector sure would be sweet!

I've owned numerous Sony products from 8-Track, Reel to Reel, Cassette to CDPs, VCRs, Receivers, stunning World Band Radios & Cameras since the 1970s. Over those many years, I've had mostly good luck with the serviceablity & longevity of their gear.

I presently still use a 5-Disc CD Player & a 5-Disc DVD Player that are both over 10 years old & performing flawlessly My 50" XBR RP LCD from 2003 is still going strong (on its second bulb) - I still like their higher end TVs. I also have their low end 2 CH Stereo Receiver for audio only & added a PS3 last XMas plus a new BD Player this Xmas so that I can play SACDs on my HT Surround system.

While Sony is not the 'quality' company of the 70's & 80's they are still a major force in innovation & engineering. Like most electronics manufacturers today, most consumer gear is cheap & not made to last very long. Jeez, I remember paying $1600 for the first slimline Sony BetaMax in the early 1980s - & it lasted forever. Beta was at that time superior to VHS in every way (it was the professional video camera format then) except taping time that caused it to lose the format war.

They have done some stupid things though, like making their memory chips for their cameras that were expensive & not compatible to the rest of the industry.

I've only owned 3 Sony products in my life and all 3 were good.

1960's: A "digital" alarm clock. Cost $60. The numbers were small cards that flipped to the correct time.

1970's: A small portable black & white battery operated TV. Cost around $300, I think.

2000's: A 5.1 Home Theater in a box that would accept up to 5 disks. Cost $500.

Come to think of it, I have a Sony Dream Machine AM/FM ICF-C16W bedside clock radio made in Malaysia that has been in use continuously since the early 1980s. It is listed as early as 1983 in their product catalogue:
