For those of you who believe all CD players are musically indistinguishable, don't bother with the Ah! For those of you who know better, the Ah! is absolutely incredible. The best CD player I've ever heard. Have no personal experience with the Stratos amp, but spiff can tell ya.

I hear ya, Ford. That's 4 pairs of M60s.
For that price, the damn thing better load up it's own CDs AND bring me a beer each time!
It better do laundry as well.

After paying that much for a cd player, I'd have to convince myself it was magical.

$2400 for both the amp and the CD player...and that was brand new. Both were probably about $1200 each new.

Oh, gee, if it's only $1200, then it's OK. I'll just go and get the cash out of my back pocket. That's still a huge chunk of change for something that reads 1s and 0s. Especially if they're only 1s and 0s from standard CDs.

Man, if you guys start saying all cd players sound alike then I'm definitely going to have to voice my dissent.

My comment was based on an incorrect price of $2,400, but even at $1,200 I would expect that you are well past the point of diminishing returns.
The again I once paid over $200Cdn for a 1:18 scale diecast F1 car.

Adam, we're just talking about the the digital outputs (aren't we?). I agree that different D/A converters can sound different.

I thought we were just saying in general. If it's going to the digital out, then the player's only a transport and I would agree with you there.

Interestingly, that $1200 player does have digital outs. So you can bypass all that icky tube stuff!
Unless they use tubes for reading the bits. That could explain why esoteric audio enthusiasts talk about the bad sound from digital recordings... 'Cause they're playing it with an ENIAC!
Oops.

Ken, I'd have to think that those tubes in the circuitry resulted in much "warmer" 1s and 0s.
