Dolby Atmos

I was wondering when they'd be putting speakers above the listening position. While it may be a while before there's a consumer implementation of it, Axiom should start to think about how to design speakers for that location. Besides the speakers on the ceiling, it sounds like Atmos will be a more elegant way to mix the sound. I think home users will benefit quite a bit once it migrates down. Auto setups should be able to make transitions between channels smoother all-around. I'm excited. Prematurely, but I'm excited.

I thought Atmos was an EMC product.

I think Dolby is struggling to remain relevant. While the geek in me thinks something like this is cool the realist in me mocks it because current content doesn't even take advantage of 7.1 so why would we expect this to be adopted.

Because sound mixing has to go this direction, where sounds are placed in 3D space, and then your receiver or processor can place it according to what speakers you have. The content wouldn't be locked into certain channels.

I remember diagrams of some crazy 26.1 systems (or was it 26.4?) a few years back. It really went around the listening space. I too thought that it was cool to have speakers overhead, and I know that the more speakers that can be controlled (key there is the control of them), the smother a panning sound, or more precise a location can be emulated. However, until I get my own IMax dome, I don't know if I really care about more than 7.x Like Ben said, they can't get much out there in 7.1, plus people are now doing front wides/highs that aren't specifically programmed for. We basically have 11.x or 12.x right now and nothing is utilizing it.

As for what speaker to us, I think that a QS8 would work great. In the little sample video they talk about "simulating" an array of speakers overhead, not actually having a full array. Nothing fills an array worth of sound in a single box (or a couple boxes) like the QS8.

Of course, most people will be limited in ceiling height, so some sort of "in ceiling" model would need to be made, but I would wager that there would be some acoustical compromises in that type of design being "in-wall/in-ceiling"...

See, this is why we need a new way of describing the surround information. Rather than specifying content for certain channels, the information there should simply be indicating where the sound is in space. Then it's up to your system to appropriately output it based on what speakers you have and where. The current way of locking content to specific channels seems a lot more limited next to that.
