Touching story. Thanks for sharing. My grandmother was a German Jew, one of the few who managed to avoid concentration camps. She, like your friends mother was a great haggler. When you have survived as much as they have, haggling probably seems trivial.

That reminds me of the TV series Firefly, where all of the cultures boiled down to 2 languages in the future, English and Chinese. Everyone spoke in English, but cussed in Chinese.
