Movies are mixed to be watched at 'reference levels' ( a zero reading on most avr's) which means dialogue is in fact very quiet and the loud parts get very LOUD, up to 105db @ reference, boosting the centre channel 2-3 db even as high as 5 db helps even things out; IIRC, I ran my VP150 4 db higher.

I am not sure if concert DVD or BRs are mixed to the same standards as movies.

Well it turns out that my center channel is not working on my AVR. Movie dialog always seemed lower than everyhting else but I realized this morning after testing a DVD I actually own and have watched before that there is a problem. I switched the jack to another speaker and have almost no sound, its not off completely but it's 25% of the volume of every other speaker. It's an HK 645, bought about 6 years ago, really not that much use on it, maybe 5 hours a week max, very disappointing for such an expensive unit. Anyone have any experience with having one serviced by HK?

Make sure you check it with different inputs.... it might be something with the DVD player!

I started out using Disney Wow on BR, I was unable to get the center channel anywhere near the volume of the others even though I had it all calibrated perfectly not too long ago so I went to the HK's speaker setup and got the same results on every input including the tuner. I swapped the center speaker cables with one of the fronts and got the same result on the that speaker.

*Edit*

Didn't read the post about the problem occurring on multiple sources.
