Hello everyone. I have been reading the posts for a week or so and am very much torn in the direction I should go...

For my new HT, I will be using the Yamaha RX-V2400 7.1 receiver. The setup will be going in a basement of my new townhome. This is not a dedicated HT Room. There will be home office as well. The room is 17' X 23'. I would say it will be 80%HT and 20% Music / DVD Concerts. Also, I will be purchasing a SACD DVD Player.

I was going to use the following setup:

VP100 for Center
M60's for L/R Fronts
4 QS 4's for the Surrounds
HSU Sub

Can someone please let me know if this combination makes sense for the requirements and room size listed above.

The one thing that is in the back of my mind is should I drop down to the M22's for the L/R fronts and save a few bucks?

you might have more luck sticking with 5.1 for now. You can use the extra moula you save from not purchasing the extra pair of QS4s and get a VP150 (instead of a VP100) and a pair of QS8s instead of the 4s. I suggest 5.1 only because there is very little 7.1 material available on DVD. It'll also make it easier on the pocket book and help to avoid the dreaded 'upgraditis'.

That's pretty good sized room. If it were me, and I were trying to fill the entire room, I'd stay with the M60s.

i'm in the same boat as you. i just ordered a pair of m60tis. next, i'll get the vp150 and qs8s. then, down the road i'll probably get the two rear surrounds. they're not critical.

Good advice... been thinking about that too. Would you recommend sticking with a 7.1 receiver though? It seems like the quality receivers are now 7.1 anyway.

Agreed, vp150, qs8s, m60s. By the time you start thinking you really need those other two channels you should have the money to buy them. And then they'll go with your (already very sweet) set. Consequently, that's the arrangement I have and I am very happy with it. I don't feel that I'm missing anything from the absent channels, and I'm very happy with the sound from the ones I do have.

I would stick with the 7.1 receiver, especially if you do intend to pick up the rear speakers down the road, this way you won't need to replace that as well. Even if you find yourself content with the 5.1 you could run 2 speakers over to the office area or something. And I would stick with the m60s, although for no particular reason other than they rock and I love mine.

The other nice thing about the 7.1 receivers is that you can use 5 of the amps for running your HT, and the other 2 for listening in "zone 2" simultaneously. I think most of the good ones let you do this.

Your wife and her friends can be in the house watching a chick flick in glorious 5.1 surround sound while you and your pals hang out in the garage tossing back a few brewskis and listening to AC/DC in stereo.

hehe... I guess you can tell that I've been planning ahead. I'm gonna put an A/B on the zone 2 channels, so I can switch between the garage and the basement workshop.

You got a bunch of great advice. I've nothing to add, but to say I agree. M60, VP150, and one pair of QS8's.
